There has been a lot of controversy around the claims of some Christian ministries to be able to enable homosexuals to become heterosexual. It is a matter of record that some people have been set free from their homosexual desires. God certainly can do it. But it is also a matter of record that some have not and that some have endured additional trauma because they had had hopes that were not realised. Some Christians have fought long and hard, including impassioned prayers, and not been set free from their same-sex desires. Some of those have remained faithful to what they believe God says, despite the pain that it causes them. Others have given up, concluding that God has made them this way and has apparently refused to change them and that it therefore cannot be wrong to have these desires. They feel they can endure the pain no longer and they turn to a life of homosexual practice.
"Conversion therapy" needs to be defined but there is no doubt that some methods have been harmful and should have no place in a Christian's ministry. A person cannot be forced to change his/her sexual orientation and, even when willing, there is no guarantee that the feelings will disappear.
The homosexual community also reacts strongly against claims of people being set free or healed because they resent the suggestion that there is anything wrong with a homosexual i.e. they do not believe that there is any need for people to change or that the homosexual state should be seen as being negative.
