People will say that some practising homosexual are clearly called by God to Christian leadership or ministry. How can Christians deny the call of God?
Furthermore, they will claim that barring homosexuals from leadership is nothing more than discrimination and is demeaning for them.
If there are expectations on members, there are even greater expectation on leaders. Leaders are expected to be an example to others.
Given the biblical teaching, it simply doesn’t make sense for a church to put into leadership a person who is sinning against God and who will not enter the Kingdom of God. If it was any other sin, the church would probably be roundly condemned if it did include inappropriate people in its leadership.
A call to leadership or ministry is a very subjective thing. No matter who the person is, a church will normally want to test that call to see if others confirm that it is genuine. Just because people say they feel called doesn’t mean they are.
In the case of a practising homosexual, the mere fact that he/she is in a relationship (or series of relationships) that is contrary to God’s will is a significant sign that all is not right in that person’s life.
Jesus said, “By their fruit you will know them.”
The question here is: Should a person living a life of defiant sin be appointed to lead a church?
Hopefully the answer is obvious.
