Despite attempts to say the Bible says something else, its message is actually very clear.
The Bible does condemn homosexual acts and the Bible is trustworthy.
This is, of course, the view of the Conservatives. They believe the Bible to be the word of God and that our beliefs must be determined by God’s revelation not by the current worldly understanding.
This understanding reveals three clear conclusions.
Homosexual acts are sinful.
Homosexual acts do not fit with God’s design of men and women for each other and they are consistently condemned, in the strongest terms, in the Bible.
Homosexual acts are sinful
The Bible does not speak about a homosexual inclination. It focuses at every point on the committing of the act. Irrespective of the person’s inclinations or reasons, the act is wrong. Orientation may make it harder but it does not force a person to act and so is no excuse.
Practising homosexuals will not enter the Kingdom of God.
Judgement is a consistent feature of the passages that deal with homosexual sin (and sexual sin more generally.) Some specifically say that homosexuals will not enter the Kingdom of God.
This is a natural consequence of the first truth. Since homosexual acts are sinful, they, like all other sins, separate us from God. The only solution is repentance and faith leading to forgiveness and salvation.
Those three conclusions will make many other issues very clear.
That is not to say they will be easy. This is a fraught debate and when people disagree. Few debates have been this difficult. Nevertheless, other conclusions logically follow and therefore are clear.
Stated simply
No one could read the relevant biblical material, without a preconceived agenda, and conclude that the Bible supports homosexual acts. The biblical material will simply not take a person to that conclusion.
According to the Bible:
Homosexual acts are sinful.
It is the act not the orientation that is sinful.
Practising homosexuals will not enter the Kingdom of God.
Addressing a Jewish audience that was uniformly of the view (because of the Old Testament passages) that homosexual acts were sinful, it would have been necessary to say nothing except some exhortations about sexual immorality generally. Writing to Christians in, say, Rome or Corinth, where sexual licence (including homosexual practice) was commonplace, it would have been necessary to tell new Christians that these practices were contrary to the biblical teaching.
That is exactly what we find in the Bible.
