Because of the increase in demand and the fact that Teva has stopped producing it, most U.S. pharmacies cannot supply disulfiram. My patients now get it through Canadian pharmacies where it is sourced from other countries.
Some have had difficulty acquiring disulfiram, but it can depend upon which wholesaler they use.
In the past when we have seen drug shortages, the drug in short supply is reintroduced from a single supplier with an enormous price increase and sometimes a new indication. We saw this with doxycycline where prior to its disappearance, drug wholesalers and suppliers even bought up existing supplies of veterinary supplies of Doxy thus creating the shortage.
We saw that happen with tetracycline, as well. It disappeared for a couple of years, and I had it compounded. After Heritage Pharmaceuticals in NJ started making it, the price skyrocketed, and compounders would (could) no longer touch it.
On the Facebook disulfiram page, some of the patients have been talking about how the disulfiram they ordered from abroad was confiscated in customs. They were sent a letter that it was illegal for them to purchase this medication from outside the U.S.
I ordered from a couple offshore pharmacies and I got an FDA letter saying I couldn’t do that.
Compounding pharmacies in Ontario, Canada can get it. It has to be compounded.
Disulfiram (250mg capsules) is available from compounding pharmacies Your local compounding pharmacy should be able to compound it.
