Mass Extinction

This is our first expert session for classrooms involved in our project. Kallie will be part of the “past” portion of the project sharing expertise in survival and extincition from a very long time ago. This session is for all classrooms participating. It will be recorded for those that cannot attend live.

Kallie Moore

Kallie Moore manages the paleontology collection at the University of Montana and co-host the YouTube channel PBS Eons. She has also consulted for Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park on renovations to the DINOSAUR ride, as well as hosted a livestream for the newly opened Deep Time Hall at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Kallie's debut nonfiction book, Tales of the Prehistoric World: Adventures from the Land of the Dinosaurs, releases this fall from Neon Squid books.

Her new book!

Travel back to the land before time to discover real dinosaur stories from the world of paleontology—featuring T. rex, Stegosaurus, and Triceratops.

Young children will enjoy thrilling tales of intrepid paleontologists discovering jaw-dropping fossils in the first book by Kallie Moore – fossil expert and host of PBS Eons on YouTube. Kids will come face-to-face with incredible prehistoric beasts including the dinosaurs that fossilized into gemstones, the shark with a saw in its mouth, and the pterosaur the size of an airplane!

As well as stories from the Jurassic era, beautifully brought to life by illustrator Becky Thorns, Tales of the Prehistoric World also whizzes back in time even further to meet the first walking fish, before speeding forwards to hang out with mammoths and saber-toothed cats.

Along the way young readers will discover what it takes to be a paleontologist!

Focus of Session

· What is an extinction?

· The Big 5 Mass Extinctions

· Survival - what happens after an extinction event?

· Lystrosaurus - case study

Before the Call

Things to consider

· Proper video setup for classroom to be seen

· Proper audio in case of interaction

· Make sure it is permissible for all students to be recorded as this will sit on YouTube. Video will be focused on the speaker, but during Q&A it cannot be guaranteed to keep recording off from classrooms. So please keep camera off if there is an issue with privacy regulations.

· Consider what you want your students to take away from the call

o Are you focused generating questions?

o Are you focused on answers to the driving question?

o Are you having them take notes, doodle, etc.?

o Example: Consider using the See, Think, Wonder Thinking Tool

During the Call

Things to consider

· Please keep on mute during presentation

· If there are questions, then please place in the chat so we can handle the questions properly. With many classrooms potentially joining we won’t have time for audio questions.

After the Call

Reflection

Consider using one of the synthesizing and organizing ideas from the Project Zero Thinking Routine Box

Optional Ideas

Open Topics

· If you want to share the learning on social media, please use hashtag #systems4survival

· If you have any further questions prior to the class, please reach out

· Please share what you plan to do in our Spaces so we can all benefit from one another and our expertise.

Resources

Resources To Utilize Pre and/or Post

The book Ends of the Worlds is a great overview of the five major mass extinctions (this would be for teachers to read or older students).

The HHMI Biointeractive site has some wonderful resources on extinction with short films, activities, and curriculum.

A bunch can be found by going to "Biointeractive Resources" and searching for "extinction".

Optional Unit

I worked with some incredible PBS Digital All- Star Educators a few years back who created is unit called Understanding Plant and Animal Adaptations: Analysis & Media-Making if you wanted to dive deeper into this work and spend more time on how plants and animals adapt.

This unit uses Eons and other resources to explore adaptations which is part of survival. The lessons plans are off to the right side or you can access here with the project media files here

You may access and download the following video files, without sound, to share with your students for their final project.
