Frame Your Design

Classroom Daily Standup

We continue to model whole group by using our project board to help the class visually see how work is progressing through the week. We are modeling the process because next week students will begin to do this work on their own in their groups.

Our next step is to once again dive back into research. For this first round we are asking students to do this work individually based on their topic from the prior session. Some of them will want to change and ask to change topics due to friends, change of interest, etc. We are not allowing them to change focus at this point as we want them to further explore one last time before making changes. This proved to be a very important detail that we realized after the lesson.

We then moved to a second round of research, but this time they could move to a new topic. Students were able to group themselves into groups no larger than four. They spent the first part sharing their ideas that they had been researching. From there they chose a topic as a group and then researched and explored that topic to build some more awareness, understanding, and hopefully cross polinating ideas among all their work.

After they had time to research we asked them to organize their research and most likely rethink their research into a structure called Frame Your Design taken from the Field Guide to Human Centered Design. This helps them look at their facts in new ways and provides context for new conversations among their peers.

We ran out of time during our time together for them to share so the elevetar pitch sessions happen during the next session.

Human Centered Design

In April 2015, IDEO.org launched the Field Guide to Human-Centered Design. The Field Guide is the latest in IDEO.org’s suite of teaching tools and a step forward in sharing the practice and promise of human-centered design with the social sector.

We are using elements of this toolkit to organize and support the work of the students in bringing their ideas to life for others to understand.
