Not bad at all. I definitely got more than I expected. The movie lacked a bit of polishing, though.
It's a fictional Netflix movie set in 1830, starring Christian Bale, who sets out to investigate an interesting murder that ends up going deeper than expected.
The movie sounds like a murder mystery, but doesn't really focus on the murder as much as one would expect. Instead, it often deviates to explore other characters and how their relationships develop.
I like the story. The movie is subtle and often poetic. The plot develops slowly, and every time you think you know what's happening, the movie adds something new to the mix. Remarkable ending.
However, the movie often got a bit dull. The plot set up mysteries of dead soldiers connected to evil practices and stuff, and just didn't raise the stakes as much as it was supposed to, until the end. Many would also argue that the plot often deviated too much.
I liked the acting, Christian Bale and Harry Melling definitely did well. I wish the music was better, though. I think that would have solved the issue of things feeling dull, even with a good plot.
Overall, it's a subtle murder mystery with high priority on the suspense. In spite of being slightly predictable, the movie is still easy to appreciate. You could watch it for time pass, but given how many of you are Mean Girls fans, you guys will probably find this a bit slow and boring.
