Extraction 2 is a fun sequel that definitely refines and surpasses the original. Unlike the previous film, the plot is quick and constantly moves forward, with sufficient exposure on the characters. It certainly didn’t live up to the current action film standards, but it’s an entertaining watch.
First off, SPOILER ALERT for Extraction 1. This is a review of the sequel. But then again, the stories are independent so I suppose there was no need for that alert. Extraction 2 is the sequel starring Chris Hemsworth, who plays a mercenary for hire named Rake Tyler. He’s the typical ‘good guy with a sad past’ kind of action hero you would see in such a film.
The film is about him being assigned to rescue a family of 3 out of a dangerous place, and transport them into a safe place. Basically an extraction. Things get complicated when a local gang starts chasing the group. And then it’s just a lot of action with guns and fights from there onwards.
The main selling point of the Extraction films is the single take action sequences. These are fight scenes shot to look like they were made in a single go, with no camera cuts at all. Part 1 had one 15 minute scene like this, which was quite different and interesting to see. The problem with part 1, however, was that the plot was far too basic, making all the action often look aimless.
Part 2 rectified these problems. Two thirds of this film is filled with single take sequences involving fights, chases, and more. This was pretty much the only detail the film worked to show off, which it did quite well. All the sequences had handheld camera style cinematography, very well choreographed stunt work, and actual plot relevance.
Objectively, the plot is practically a repeat of Part 1 in the sense that it involves a very similar rescue. What set Extraction 2 apart from Part 1 is that the action didn’t take away attention to the actual plot. We got to see characters struggling with their conflicts as well as characters like Tyler grappling with their past.
The film did all this, but didn’t really take it all the way. Music was average, and while the characters had substance, emotional weight wasn’t shown to viewers properly, often feeling very surface level. And the plot didn’t have enough details to make the film amazing.
Overall, Extraction 2 is just a fun watch for anyone looking for a good time pass action film with some proper gore. This is a pattern I’ve seen far too many times as of late. Seems like most movies are just becoming time pass ones. I’m seriously waiting for a change. Regardless, I’m glad this one was more than just time pass.
