I don’t see movies like these very often. This was a genuinely pleasant movie that told a meaningful yet entertaining story. It didn’t force any emotions onto the viewers. Instead, the film just focused on getting out a good story, which it did pretty well.
Ford v Ferrari is about the events leading up to the 1966 Le Mans race, a car race that lasts 24 hours. Ken Miles (Christian Bale) and Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) are tasked with building a racecar for Ford Motors. This is about their journey.
By opening with a narration, the movie really set up the fact that it would be less about the events, and more about answering the question, ‘Why do we race?’ The movie explores the passions of racing. So you don’t have to love racing to enjoy this movie.
I liked that the movie doesn’t just document the story of the race. It may have exaggerated the plot a bit. To my slight dismay, it also antagonized Lorenzo Bandini (Ferrari racer) a little more than they should have. But the movie was able to bring out the passion for racing that all the characters had.
This movie takes viewers on an entertaining and enjoyable journey of racing. The sound effects and visuals aren’t overly done. They’re grounded and more realistic. With good close ups and the right camera movements, they also make the film very immersive.
Let’s face it, the latest Fast and Furious films kinda ruined car movies. This movie took me back to the best parts of a movie about cars. The dialogues and well acted scenes are what make this movie really stand out as a great film.
Overall, Ford v Ferrari took a simplistic story and weaved it into a fun experience without forcing any unnecessary action or humor. It kept things simple and stuck to the main purpose of showing the beauty of racing. I’m not exactly a big fan of racing, and I still enjoyed it. I’m sure others will too.
