When I saw the first Blade Runner movie, I thought to myself that this movie was perfect, and that it would be impossible to create a good sequel for this. I am happy to report that I was VERY wrong. I consider Blade Runner 2049 to be the best sequel of all time. Don’t get upset, hear me out.
The first movie asked us what it meant to be human, and was really analytical. Usually, sequels to such movies fall flat due to being too plot oriented and being poorly executed. Denis did something quite different. He created a very new story, this time revolving around a law abiding replicant.
This movie explores a lot of common themes. It looks at love, memories, creation, and more. But instead of exploring them in the same way, this movie updated this cyberpunk movie to our time of dark and gritty themed movies. The best part is the visuals. This movie REALLY stepped it up on visuals.
Rather than showing these aspects as what makes one human, it shows love and memories becoming social constructs, and the power of creation spoiling mankind. I really love that. It takes a while to notice this detail.
I particularly loved Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Joe. He played a protagonist who, interestingly, was not special in any way. Just a regular Joe. Many see his acting as dull and lifeless, but I disagree. He was not dull, he was restrained. There’s a subtle difference.
Also, the Baseline Test is really something to appreciate. I don’t want to say much about it, it’s so cool. Watch it yourself and see. If you want, DM me. I still have much to talk about. The characters, the plot, the ending, so much.
