Reminders from the Training Team

Please arrive on time, we will be turning away those who arrive late. Remember to take into account travel time and potential delays. It is best to arrive AT LEAST 15 minutes early for each training day.

Training Modules

Mandatory modules to complete are Welcome Video, COREELMS Training, Anti-Harassment, Health Scholar / Junior Health Scholar Playlist, Health Scholar Patient Care Competencies Playlist, and SJO Workplace Violence Prevention Module. Failure to complete required training modules may result in dismissal from training days.

SJO Workplace Violence Prevention Module

Under this module, there are two PDF files for you to review, one being the information document, the other being an agreement form. Upon reviewing the document, please complete & sign the Workplace Violence Agreement Form to verify that you have read and understood the contents outlined in the PDF file. The completed Agreement Form is to be submitted onto CORE ELMS under the module section by clicking "Add" and uploading the signed form. Fill out the following on the completion page:

  • Completed on Date: [Date of submission]

  • Expiration Date: [Leave Blank]

  • Comments: [Leave Blank]

  • Completion Status: [Mark Complete]

  • File Attachment: [Upload Agreement Form]

These modules MUST be completed before coming to Training Day 1. If you have any questions regarding the lectures, please contact our Training Team, at sjotraining@copehealthscholars.org.

Please make sure to put enough time into the modules, they are integral to your understanding of how a hospital operates and how to be a successful Scholar and future health care professional. With this said make sure to read each module thoroughly, rather than skipping through the material. Please note any questions you have as you go through the material. Please note that this is roughly 20+ hours of online education.

We suggest you get started as soon as possible and study a little bit every day to avoid ‘cramming’ before your exams. You are learning this material to be fully competent and prepared when helping our staff and patients as an active member of our patient care team member!

Badge Photos

On Training Day 1 or Training Day 2, please be prepared to have your photo taken. We will be using your photo to submit and request your badge with St. Joseph Hospital.

Arrive with 100% focus. We will need you to be alert and focused the entire time. Some tips for staying focused are getting a good night's rest, eating a healthy breakfast, and staying hydrated throughout your time on site.

Arrive with a smile and a positive attitude!

Training Day Attire

All Health Scholar Trainees MUST be in full uniform when attending training days. This includes:

  • Long khaki pants (that cover ankles) and will allow for a wide range of movement

  • White polo shirt (tucked in at all times)

  • White closed-toed, non-canvas shoes

  • Face mask

  • Belt, if needed

  • Black pen

Here are a couple reminders:

  • Nails must be kept clean, neat and of moderate length. Nail polish must be unchipped, of neutral tone, and without embellishment (e.g., crystals, diamonds). Artificial nails and gel polish are not permitted.

  • Scholars must be moderate in the use of make-up, perfume, cologne, and after-shave lotion. Scented cosmetics are prohibited in patient care areas.

  • Jewelry must be conservative and professional

  • Hairstyles should be conservative, clean, and well-kept. Long hair must be completely pulled back and off the face and neck. Visible unnatural shades of hair color (e.g., blue, green, pink, purple) are not permitted

  • Additionally, mustaches, beards, and sideburns must be kept clean and well-trimmed at all times. Scholars must cover any visible tattoos or facial piercings.

Scholars will be provided with their site-specific uniform polo after training days and will be responsible for purchasing the rest of their uniform.

Examples of inappropriate uniform attire include, but are not limited to:

  • Mini-skirts

  • Skirts with excessively high slits

  • Excessively tight pants

  • Shorts or cut-offs

  • Canvas shoes

  • Leggings, jeggings, spandex, and any pants above the calf

  • Pants worn below hip level (“sagging”) or excessively loose clothing

  • Sweaters or jackets worn over the uniform

Why are we NOT allowed to wear sweaters and jackets?

The uniform maintains professionalism, visibility, safety, and infection protection. A white long sleeve shirt is permitted to be worn under your polo.

If you do not arrive in uniform, we will turn you away from attending Training Days.

How to tell if my shoes are non-canvas?

If you were to spill liquid on your shoes and you are able to wipe it off, then you have the correct type of shoe. If you were to spill liquid on your shoes and you are NOT able to wipe it off because it seeps through, then please find another pair of shoes.

Split skirts with stockings or leggings underneath are permitted for Scholars citing religious reasons. For Scholars who choose to wear skirts, note that the length of all skirts are to be no shorter than knee-length. For safety reasons, ankle length skirts are not advised.
