The typical patients that arrive from the field and through ambulance transfers are patients with cardiovascular conditions like STEMIs and with neurological conditions like strokes or seizures. The patient care team working in the ECC consists of numerous professionals such as physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dietitians, ED technicians, social workers, and case managers.

Students will have a chance to closely interact with a multi-disciplinary team as they treat the most critical patients at St. Joseph Hospital. With 20 available beds, the majority of the patients on the floor may be under isolation precautionary measures, so your assistance with staff members is heavily requested. These patients have very complex conditions, and may have multiple lines, multiple drips, and conditions can vary from recovery from open heart surgery to multiple organ system failure and sepsis. An RN is never assigned more than one patient; the most critical patients may be assigned 2 RNs. From 7am – 7pm, there are always two intensivists, one pharmacist, and one case manager assigned to the unit. At night, there is one intensivist on the unit and other staff on call. You will also see dietitians, respiratory techs, and a number of other specialists and allied health fields rotating through the day.

This unit provides students with the ability to interact with patients undergoing long term treatments and critical care. Students will have a chance to closely interact with patients as they receive treatments and therapies. With 20 available beds, the majority of the patients on the floor may be under isolation precautionary measures, so your assistance with staff members is heavily requested. Personable and good communication skills will be required for this floor due to the in depth interactions students may experience. Most patients are in a critical condition and require extra attention. My story is highly valued and encouraged for use on this floor. There are only 2 CNAs on each shift so our presence is in high demand!
