Cardiovascular Short Stay Unit is a specialized surgical unit providing care for patients undergoing a wide variety of procedures including mitral valve replacement, CABG, TAVR, cardioversion, TEE, pacemaker placement, paracentesis, lung/thyroid biopsy, etc. Scholars will assist a team of health care professionals with pre- and post-operative care. The TAVR program at St. Joseph Hospital of Orange is currently one of the nation's top. There will be opportunities for Health Scholars to observe some of the best physicians in the field operate and learn more about this procedure from them.
As a scholar in ECT Unit, you will have the opportunity to work with a patient-care team consisting of psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and support staff as they administer treatment to patients. ECT is a procedure, done under managed anesthesia care (MAC), in which small electric currents are passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure. ECT seems to cause changes in brain chemistry that can reverse symptoms of certain mental illnesses. ECT is primarily used to treat severe, treatment-resistant depression. This type of therapy is usually considered only if a patient’s illness has not improved after other treatments (i.e. antidepressant medications or psychotherapy) are tried, or in cases where rapid response is needed such as when a patient is unable to move or respond the outside world (catatonia), is suicidal, or malnourished as a result of severe depression. As a Health Scholar on ECT, you will have the opportunity to provide patient care on a behavioral health unit, observe at least one ECT procedure, and assist in the pre- and post-procedure care.

Working alongside staff, Health Scholars have the opportunity to experience the laboring process as well as observe both vaginal and Cesarean section birth! Scholars also forge connections with soon-to-be mothers in the Antepartum Unit who are on extended periods of bed rest.
Outpatient Renal is a unit that specializes in providing treatment and care for the kidney(s) of outpatients. On this floor, you will have access to the Dialysis Center as well as the Kidney Transplant Center. The dialysis center is shared by St. Joseph Hospital and CHOC. Here, you may have the opportunity to create relationships with patients since they are seen on a fixed schedule. Furthermore, at the CHOC dialysis center you may interact with the Child Life Specialist to understand how they prepare children, families, and schools for this lifetime treatment. Upstairs at the kidney transplant center, you may have the opportunity to learn about the several factors that are considered for kidney transplants such as insurance, transplant wait list, familial support, etc. With access to both the Dialysis center and Kidney Transplant Center, we are given the opportunity to learn about the numerous ways care can be navigated for outpatients with kidney related health conditions.
