This is an outpatient unit, where treatment can be as brief as a quick injection or require a full-day transfusion, meaning the patients go home on the same day. This unit provides intravenous treatment for patients who are undergoing critical transfusions such as blood, chemotherapy, gene-conversion therapy, etc. Most patients in this unit are ambulatory, so Health Scholars role includes assisting with workflow - such as bringing the patient to their room, ensuring they are comfortable, taking vital signs, restocking, setting up new rooms, etc - as well as having sacred and meaningful interactions with the patients and family members during life-saving treatments.

Health Scholars working in Oncology will have the opportunity to work with patients undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy in addition to interacting with overflow patients transferred over from other hospital floors. Many of the patients on the floor may be under isolation precautionary measures, so your assistance with staff members is heavily requested. In addition, you will have the opportunity to converse with patients on a one-on-one basis and help them navigate through educational videos. Personable and good communication skills will be required for this floor due to the in depth interactions students may experience. My story and patient partners is highly valued and encouraged for use on this floor. Please remember some or all the patients are in a constant state of pain and that your presence and conversation provides them a lot of comfort.
Please note, students shifting on the unit are required to be compliant with Varicella and Tdap vaccination requirements. Students with waivers for either vaccination will not be permitted to shift.
Health Scholars on Radiology will have the opportunity to work very closely with the X-Ray and ultrasound technologists and the CT registered nurses. The Radiology Department is open to inpatient and outpatient patients and has five main modalities: X-Ray, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, and MRI. Radiology is unique in that scholars are able to observe different procedures, such as fluoroscopies, biopsies, lumbar taps, and more! Health Scholars can also accompany X-Ray technologists on their portable X-Ray runs. Radiology is an observational unit with plenty of opportunities to engage with staff members, radiology technologists in training, and radiologists. Health Scholars are able to accompany patients throughout their entire journey through radiology--from their transfer from CV pre-op or another department to their X-Ray or CT procedure and finally to their discharge at CV post-op. On Radiology, Health Scholars can practice their communication skills, organization skills, and learn new medical terms and radiology procedures. As on any other floor, being proactive and making your presence known on the department will help you make the most out of your shifts!
