The Care Navigator Scholar program offers individuals the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in improving health outcomes. As a Care Navigator Scholar, you will receive training to prepare you to connect patients to educational resources, community-based opportunities, and more. Under the mentorship of care coordinators and case managers, you will be uniquely positioned to support interventions targeted towards special populations including homeless individuals and those diagnosed with chronic conditions.
EMR Training to access patient records via Epic
Understanding of the U.S. Insurance system
Learn how Case Management functions in the hospital as part of the patient care team
Explore the post-hospital care for patients in need of extra services
Understand Medicare and the rights of patients with this government insurance
Upon completion of the program, graduates will earn a certificate from Keck Graduate Institute and distinguish themselves as top candidates for employment in the health care industry.
Learn about population health management across the care continuum
Increased knowledge of the impact of social determinants of health outcomes and the changing healthcare landscape
Assist in educating patients about their conditions and care options
Learn more about important administration skills necessary for documentation in a health care setting
Enhance health care industry knowledge by engaging in outpatient and inpatient settings
Develop communication and customer service skills
As a Care Navigator Scholar, you will have the opportunity to learn and gain firsthand exposure to care management and health care career path opportunities that support improved health outcomes and quality metrics by supporting the care team in delivering targeted interventions.
Be an active Health Scholar, a recent Health Scholar graduate (within the last 6 months) or a student simply interested in healthcare management
Attend 3 days of Care Navigator Scholar training
Pass the Care Navigator Entrance Exam with a score of 80%
Attend 2 four-hour shadow shifts
Complete a 200-hour rotational commitment over a 6-9 month period with 1-2 shifts per week
Care Navigators may dress in business casual attire when shifting at the hospital. A Care Navigator polo shirt (as pictured on the far left) is provided for all Care Navigators but is not required to be worn during shifts.
