1. Spiritual Calling
A Dwarf (or another individual) must first demonstrate a deep spiritual connection to Berronar Truesilver or the ideals of the order: protection, healing, and the nurturing of life and community.
Many aspirants are drawn to this calling after witnessing great acts of kindness, enduring hardship, or feeling inspired by a vision or blessing tied to the Sanctuary of the Emerald Forge.
2. The Trial of Stone
The aspirant undergoes a test of endurance and resolve, symbolizing the strength of stone. They must complete a physically and spiritually grueling task, such as carrying a burdened anvil up a mountain path, enduring extreme conditions, or holding a vigil at the forge for three days and nights without rest.
This trial is meant to teach the aspirant patience, fortitude, and reliance on their inner strength.
3. The Trial of Roots
This trial requires the aspirant to demonstrate their capacity to nurture and protect life. They might be tasked with healing the wounded, resolving a conflict within the community, or ensuring the growth of an ailing sapling or crop.
This phase tests their compassion, problem-solving abilities, and ability to foster growth even in adverse conditions.
4. The Forge of Unity
At the culmination of their trials, the aspirant is brought before the Forge of Unity, a sacred forge within the order’s sanctuary. They must craft or contribute to the creation of an artifact or tool that symbolizes their devotion to the order’s principles.
This artifact, often a weapon, shield, or holy symbol, becomes the aspirant’s sacred item and is imbued with blessings by the High Matron/Patron and the Circle of Stone.
5. The Oath of Devotion
Once the aspirant has proven their worth, they kneel before the forge and take a sacred oath tailored to the Order of Rock and Roots. This oath binds them to their duty as a protector of the weak, a nurturer of life, and a steward of tradition.
The oath includes these key tenets:
Steadfastness: "I will stand unyielding as stone, shielding those who cannot shield themselves."
Growth: "I will nurture life and ensure the roots of hope flourish even in barren soil."
Unity: "I will defend the bonds of family, hearth, and home, uniting all under the forge's light."
Tradition: "I will honor the ways of my forebears, keeping their flame alive for generations to come."
6. Blessing of the Order
After swearing the oath, the High Matron/Patron and the gathered Rootwardens bless the new Paladin, placing a hand on their shoulders as the Forge of Unity glows brightly.
The Paladin is then presented with their ceremonial bronze-rooted weapon (typically a warhammer, axe, or shield) and their official title as a protector of the order.
Protect the weak and uphold the order’s values wherever they travel.
Serve as a beacon of hope and unity in times of strife.
Safeguard sacred sites, relics, and the community from threats.
Mediate disputes and ensure justice is served with fairness and compassion.
Paladins of the Order of Rock and Roots are revered as champions of balance, blending the strength of stone with the nurturing care of roots. Their presence inspires hope and unity in Dwarven and allied communities alike.
Becoming a full Paladin of the Order of Rock and Roots requires ascending through several ranks, each representing a stage of growth, responsibility, and spiritual connection. Each rank has specific titles, duties, and trials to prepare the aspirant for their ultimate role as a protector and nurturer of the order’s ideals.
Description: The starting rank for all aspirants, where they first pledge themselves to the teachings of the order. Initiates are expected to study the history, tenets, and practices of the order while assisting with communal tasks.
Duties:
Maintain shrines and ceremonial sites.
Assist Hearthkeepers in daily rituals and services.
Learn basic combat and healing techniques.
Trial to Advance: The Trial of Acceptance involves demonstrating a heartfelt understanding of the order’s teachings by reciting their tenets and crafting a small token, such as a carved symbol or a forged trinket, to be blessed by a Hearthkeeper.
Description: Once an Initiate has proven their commitment, they become an Ember Squire. This rank focuses on learning the balance between strength and nurturing. They are paired with a mentor, typically a Rootwarden or a junior Paladin, to learn under their guidance.
Duties:
Shadow their mentor in combat, mediation, and spiritual duties.
Practice advanced weapon techniques and divine magic.
Participate in rites like the Blessing of the Forge or the Rite of Stone and Seed to understand their deeper meanings.
Trial to Advance: The Trial of Stone, which tests their endurance, resolve, and ability to endure hardship without faltering.

Duties:
Lead small ceremonies under supervision.
Defend sacred sites and communities during minor conflicts.
Cultivate a grove or maintain a forge to symbolize the balance of life and creation.
Trial to Advance: The Trial of Roots, where the Acolyte must demonstrate their ability to nurture and protect life, solve a community issue, or heal a grievous wound—be it physical or emotional.
Description: This is the final rank before becoming a full Paladin. Forgebound Seekers are tasked with embarking on a pilgrimage or quest to prove their dedication to the order’s values. This often involves traveling to distant lands, safeguarding vulnerable communities, or retrieving a lost relic of the order.
Duties:
Undertake a sacred quest assigned by the Circle of Stone.
Serve as the order’s representative in disputes or alliances.
Begin crafting their sacred weapon, shield, or relic that will be blessed upon becoming a Paladin.
Trial to Advance: The Forge of Unity, where the Seeker must present the artifact they have forged or recovered and demonstrate their unwavering devotion by swearing their final oath.
Description: The final title awarded upon completing the Forge of Unity ceremony and swearing the Oath of Devotion. Paladins serve as the ultimate protectors and champions of the order, embodying its values in all their actions.
Duties:
Defend the weak and uphold justice.
Lead ceremonial rites and mentor lower ranks.
Safeguard the order’s sacred sites, relics, and traditions.
Serve as an emissary or warrior of the order in times of need.

Ember Squire → Mentored training in strength and nurturing.
Rooted Acolyte → Deeper connection and independent responsibility.
