Croatia

Otok - Cres:

This island which is nowadays part of Croatia used to belong to Italy before WWII. Amongst other chapels, San Gaetano's is situated in the town's surroundings and was built by one of the brotherhoods. Its architectural style is Romanesque with semi-circular projecting apse and flat ceiling in the nave. The beamed ceiling was covered with wood in ì984. On top stands the squat bell tower. In ancient times it was dedicated to St Clare who is shown on the titular painting together with Our Lady, San Gaetano and Saint Apollonia. The dedication to San Gaetano was certainly introduced after the canonization of the saint took place in 1671 and is to be attributed to a group of local devotees of the saint, perhaps linked to charities existing on the site.
