This Week
-Tues., April 30: James Hubbell’s Architecture of Jubilation
San Diego Central Library Art Gallery – Onsite (10:15-Noon)
-Sign-in: You should arrive at San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101 by 10:15am. We’ll gather at the elevator on the first level of the underground parking structure (“P-1”) below the library.
-Parking: Here’s a link to library parking from the City’s website.
The entrance to the underground parking is on 11th Street. We will meet at the elevator on “P-1” and go as a group first to the main floor of the library where we will meet Bonnie Domingos, Library Arts and Culture Exhibitions Manager.
· First two (2) hours free with validation* for library users Validation is available in the first-floor lobby.
· $1.25 for each 20 minutes or part of 20 minutes
-Parking Safety: Please stay in your car until you see other classmates gathered by the elevator on "P-1" at 10:15.
-Public Transportation: The link also has information about taking public transit to the library. Anyone using that option should arrive at the library’s main entrance on Park Blvd. A security guard will let them into the library to meet up with the group on the main floor at 10:25 AM.
-Guided Tour: The guided tour by Mariannee Gerdes (see below) will begin at 10:30 and last about an hour. This will include time to explore the other exhibits on the 9th floor on your own that includes panoramic views from the roof of the San Diego Harbor, Coronado, Downtown San Diego, etc.
-After class: You may enjoy visiting the exhibits on the 8th floor on your own. There are tables outside the Art Gallery on the 9th floor. You can bring a snack/lunch to enjoy on the roof of the Central Library.

“Marianne Gerdes is a film and television producer of documentary films and series television spanning the genres of art, architecture, design, gardens, and history. Welcome to another one of our Rediscovering San Diego & Beyond Onsite Tours. I’m looking forward to our tour being led by Imam Taha, Director of Religious Studies at 10:00 AM.
It’s raining pretty hard as I write this. However…the National Weather Service says there is only a “slight chance of showers before 10 AM. Weather Underground also says there will be “sunshine and clouds mixed.”
Since our tour is indoors, I’ll be there…rain or shine!

-Please note that NO SHOES are allowed in the prayer halls (men & women).
-For your convenience, there is a prayer hall for men downstairs and a prayer hall for women located upstairs.
-In the Islamic tradition, it is discouraged for individuals from different genders to shake hands when introduced to each other.
-Visitors are requested to dress modestly. Additionally, it is considered respectful for women to wear a headscarf, although it is not required.
-We look forward to hosting you and others in the spirit of brotherhood, peace, and unity.”

-If you would like to enter the “prayer areas,” they request that you take off your shoes.
-A headscarf is recommended but not required. I’ll bring some of my scarfs that you are welcome to borrow…or keep…up to you!
My thanks to Imam Taha and those at the Islamic Center of Clairemont for their assistance with this tour. (I was told that “Imam” is another way of addressing someone as “Mister.”)
