I replaced the photo of the aircraft carrier, USS Coral Sea, that your RSD classmate, Bob Horn (AKA Retired Lt. Commander Bob Horn) served on as part of his 20-year experience in the Navy. Bob will share a little about the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942.
Again, let me know if there is an interest in having an onsite or another Zoom presentation by one of the USS Midway speakers in the future. -Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) Assessment Week
This past week was an assessment week which is done each year to see if our classes are meeting our Student Learning Objectives. There are learning objectives for the Institution, our Emeritus program, and each of our courses. Our class falls under: RETIREMENT LIVING. We assessed the Retirement Living SLO #3 for Critical Thinking as follows:
SLO #3: "The Retirement Living-Later Life student will be able to compare and contrast legal services available to the older adult by assessing which service best fits their personal needs through the analysis of up-to-date retirement living information."
The discussion during class was used to see if it was successful in helping students to express opinions in a logical way while actively listening. We asked that you express yourself and listen to others. Afterward, you were asked to answer two questions:
Based on the activity in class (or the weekly info packet online), please answer these questions as they pertain to SLO #3 on Critical Thinking (above).

Share with your friend what your experience has been with these issues and ask them about their own experiences and/or preferences related to these issues. At the conclusion of our class discussion, you were asked to submit a 2-question survey and send me an email with your answers to the survey. (This can include talking with a friend or me about last week’s lesson on the Civil & Human Rights Center.)

This week we will have a historical and contemporary overview of the role of civil and human rights nationally as well as locally in Atlanta. Our class will include a virtual tour of the National Center for Civil & Human Rights followed by a class discussion on “Crossing Lines…or Not” in terms of what has happened in our lifetime with some of these same issues.

Did you know that Coke-Cola used to have cocaine in it? Our presentation will include a virtual tour of the Coke-Cola Museum, information on the role of Coke-Cola in Atlanta historically and today, as well as a class discussion on the changes seen in our lifetime with fast food and drinks.

The District is postponing the implementation of the required .edu student email communication until the end of the fall semester. This means students will be able to continue using their personal email address on file to receive District Communication.

Hi everyone,
Today's tour of Petco Park was a lot of fun. Thanks to all who were able to join us for $15 vs. $30. Best of all was getting together in person with such an excellent tour guide. It turned out to be a beautiful day at Petco Park with the sun coming out. For some, getting together also included celebrating St. Patrick's together over lunch a day early. Such a day!
After Louise Toroi's presentation last Tuesday on the Villa Montezuma, it was good to hear that many of you will be going on her tour of the Villa Montezuma this Friday at 1:00. There will also be a tour at 2:15 and 3:30. Tours are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Due to the exhibit by Ukrainian Artists, The HeART & Soul of Ukraine, tickets are $5 vs. $15 through the end of April. If you have any questions or would like to make a reservation for a tour, contact Louise at 619-233-8833.

Petco Park Onsite Tour

Description: The behind-the-scenes tour of Padres stadium lasts about an hour and a half and covers 1.5 miles of the stadium. Each tour differs slightly, depending on what other activities are going on in the ballpark. Our tour will include the following stops:
§ Field Warning Trac.
§ Cutwater Coronado Club
§ Padres Hall of Fame Presented by Motorola
§ Press Box
§ Private Luxury Suite
§ Breitbart Hall of Fame
When: 9:45 AM for check-in & fees. The tour begins at 10.
Where: Check-in at the Ticket Windows between the Gaslamp Gate & The Padres Team Store (215 Tony Gwynn Dr #1, San Diego, CA 92101). I’ll be at the Ticket Window with a red umbrella.
Costs: $15 (vs. $30!)
Parking: 6th & K Parkade - Across the street from the Team Store.
Transportation:
--Trolley: Take the trolley to the Gaslamp Quarter Station (Fifth Ave.& Harbor Drive) which is within 2 blocks of the stadium. The Blue Line runs from Old Town through Downtown all the way to the border. For seniors, people with disabilities, or Medicare users, the fare is $1.25. Source
--Park & Ride Lots: You can use MTS' free Park & Ride lots along MTS Trolley and Rapid routes for easy access to Petco Park using the trolley!
Tips & Helpful Hints
--The weather prediction is a 10% chance of rain so it’s looking good for our tour this Thursday! Dress warm!
--Ask questions and engage with your tour guide for the best experience.
--Wear comfortable shoes for walking and climbing stairs
--Bring a camera to take photos of the iconic sites and historic stops. Take advantage of views of the field and Western Metal Supply Building.
--Look out for the Padres Hall of Fame and the Breitbard Hall of Fame.

On March 27, all emails from the district will be sent to a new email address which would be an SDCCD one (name@student.sdccd.edu).
Our Emeritus Leadership Team is working on a way to roll this out to our students. We are discussing some options which will make it simpler and easier. The following is an example of information that I received today:
“As you might have already heard, SDCCD is now providing students with district email addresses. *SD Safari Park – Ages 65+ Free. Onsite
Join us at 9:30 for an onsite adventure at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park! Admission is free. Parking is $15 so carpooling is encouraged. This could include meeting a classmate in the parking lot of the Westfield North County Mall off I-15 and Via Rancho Pkwy East (Exit 27) in Escondido. There is a large parking lot with restaurants and stores like the Cheesecake Factory, BJ’s Steak and Brewhouse, and Target. For many, this would be on your way to the SD Safari Park or someplace you might enjoy having lunch together after our visit to the Safari Park.

At the end of the class, I will include information focused on Registration, Course Overview, and Zoom Essentials. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions or need additional information!
When you sign into Zoom, please rename yourself so the class sees your first and last initials. I will talk about this in class. To ensure the safety and security of our online class, I carefully check to see if those joining the class are registered and enrolled for each class.
Class Enrollment
I encourage students to sign-up for both my Tuesday (#24544) & Thursday (#24529) classes as it gives you more choices. I will explain more about this in class. Let me know if you have any problems with updating your registration and your class enrollment.
Zoom Essentials
Attached and below is information about Zoom. Most students join from their PC, Mac, smartphone, or phone by clicking on the link or phone number sent via email. I use the same Zoom link each semester for each of my classes, so I encourage you to save the handout about Zoom (or information with the Zoom link) on your desktop, as a bookmark, or somewhere that provide easy access to the link.
I include the Zoom link in my weekly email. For security purposes, however, I do not include this information in the weekly email that I copy and paste onto my RSD website. If I have not included it in my weekly email, you may need to check a prior week’s email to get the link. If there are any questions or problems with this, please let me know!

Finally, we'll compare the differences between the Old Town Trolley Tours and the San Diego SEAL Tours. After January, the website for the Old Town Trolley Tours says that "Each Hometown pass holder rides free when accompanied by a guest who has purchased A FULL FARE adult ticket." Thursday (Feb. 9) - The Chinese Lunar New Year Traditions: A 15-Day Celebration. We will learn about the traditions, food, and activities of the Lunar New Year and where they were celebrated here in San Diego. Join us in learning more about the Lantern Festival and the role that food plays in their celebrations to wish you good luck, good fortune, and good health. Do you, or someone you know, have any traditions to symbolize a wish for success in the upcoming year? When enjoying Chinese food throughout the year, where are your favorite places to go in San Diego?
