End of Our Summer Semester Celebrations
- Past, Present, & Future Explorations -
Aug. 17 (Tu), 2021: On the Road Again
Aug. 19 (Th), 2021: Our Changing Lives with Technology
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your participation throughout this past semester. It is a disappointment that the Emeritus/Old Adult Program will not have any onsite RSD tours this fall. However, I look forward to continuing our fall classes via Zoom!
Last Week
Our travel explorations on Tuesday included a review of State Parks near San Diego and stories from Retired Ranger Dick Miller. On Thursday, Luciano Emanuele did a great job with sharing a historical, current, and future overview of Sicily, Italy. Thanks to you both for your contributions to our classes this summer! I will send a text when I have posted the recordings by Ret. Ranger Dick Miller.
--Send me a text or email if you would like me to send you the link for the final chapters of the film, The Living Dream, to view this summer.
This week

Grand Lake, Colorado
“The Soul of the Rockies”
July 20 (Tu) & 22 (Th), 2021
Presentations By
Grand Lake Fire Marshall Dan Mayer
Hi everyone,
Last Week
Recordings: Click on Michael Robertson’s RSD-Tu & Th presentations.
As one of only 15 docents, Michael gave us a rich overview history of the Old Globe (Tu) and the Reopening of its Theaters & Plaza (Th). Our thanks to Michael for his generosity in answering so many of your questions. We look forward to the upcoming production of “Hair” in August.
This Week
Presentation: Grand Lake & The Historic East Troublesome Fire
Presenter: Grand Lake Fire Marshall Dan Mayer
Description: Grand Lake, Colorado borders the western edge and entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. “The East Troublesome Fire in 2020 incinerated 193,812 acres according to the U.S. Forest Service, making it the second-largest in Colorado history. For Fire Marshall Dan Mayer, the most remarkable statistic is how quickly the fire grew. In less than a day, the East Troublesome burned more than 120,000 acres, making it by far the most rapid-fire expansion in state history.” Source.
-July 20 (Tu): Grand Lake (‘The Soul of the Rockies’) & The Historic Growth of the 2020 East Troublesome Fire - The rapid growth of the East Troublesome Fire shocked firefighters and scientists, redefining how quickly Colorado wildfires can grow in an era of rapid climate change. Only now are scientists beginning to understand the forces behind the firestorm. Their insights could help inform a new set of tools to prevent and predict the most severe wildfires. As Colorado (and other climates like San Diego) warms and dries, it is important to see what we can learn in terms of preparation, anticipation, communication, and community support with events like the East Troublesome Fire.
·Read: East Troublesome Fire may signal a new era of big blow-ups. (Associated Press, 2/1/21)
-July 22 (Th): The Resiliency & Unique Beauty of Grand Lake Today
In addition to the unique beauty of Grand Lake (as seen from the land and on the water), there is a unique beauty with the welcome of visitors and stories of resiliency from the locals. Viewing the 2021 fireworks over Grand Lake was beautiful on many levels and recommended for future travels!
