Understanding, personal applications and assessments, of community resources and information related to physical, cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual, and financial aspects of retirement living/later life for older adults ages 55+ will be incorporated into the course content, questions, recommendations for additional information, and tours as follows:
Description: Provides older adult students with an understanding of health maintenance, consumer awareness, and leisure-time activities that promote positive aging, as well as adaptations to physical, cognitive, affective illness (decline and adaptations), as well as leisure-time activities that promote positive aging.
Purpose/Relevance of Class Field Trips/Tours: “Rediscovering San Diego” is a field trip class in which older adult students ages 55 plus will discover, explore, learn about and experience San Diego resources, as well as politically, culturally, historically, economically and educationally significant sites and venues within our community, first hand. Research is required prior to each visit and follow-up discussions are conducted during and after each class.
Course Goals:
- Awareness of community information and referral centers.
- Skills in selecting appropriate health care services.
- Knowledge of financial services, including pensions, for adults.
- Knowledge of legal services available to older adults.
- Knowledge of various community transportation services available to older adults.
- Awareness of housing needs, locations, and community services to older adults.
- Awareness of alternatives available for leisure time activities.
- Awareness of community events and community affairs.
- Awareness of employment opportunities available to retirees.
- Ability to cope with and accept their changing lifestyles in a positive manner.
Course Objectives:
- Describe and utilize community informational referral centers.
- List the home health and health services available to older adults.
- Describe and list the financial services available for older adults.
- List and describe the legal services available for older adults.
- List and utilize community transportation services available for older adults.
- Review housing needs, locations, and services available to the older adults.
- Identify and list leisure time activities available in the community.
- Formulate plans for pursuing and expanding an interest in community events and current affairs.
- Describe employment opportunities for retirees.
- Utilize techniques for coping with the challenges and stresses of a changing lifestyle.
