Sign in: 9:30 /am (at the latest) to get a free ticket. They open at 9 AM if you want to come earlier! It’s first come/first served basis so the earlier the better! I’m going to get there at 9 AM! They said they may run out of free tickets by 10 AM.
Cost: Free for locals through January 31. (Note: 1-Day adult ticket is usually $52 with taxes).
Parking: Old Town Transit Center (public parking). Click on map for free parking lots A, B, D, and E.
Accessibility: All wheels accessible. Once seated, you can remain seated. ‘Hopping On/Off’ at stops along the tour is up to you!
Masks: Public health officials still recommend riders use mask coverings in public transportation settings; however, masks are not required.
Drivers: Jack was Luciano’s driver. No guarantees on who you get!

2. Dates for the Spring semester are Wednesday, Feb. 1, to Saturday, June 10, 2023.
3. Registration for the Spring classes will end on Feb. 28 (Tu) (the 1st census date) for fully online, hybrid, or HyFlex classes. (RSD is a hybrid class as it includes some onsite classes.)

*“We went yesterday and stopped in Coronado and went to a couple thrift stores (by a church) then to lunch at Boney's market (near the bridge). They have tables and chairs out for dining. We walked all over Coronado and barely got back on the bus since it was nearly full. They were giving out numbers for people in line to board the bus since it is a popular stop. I would recommend going on a weekday since there will be fewer people, starting at 9am and heading back by 2pm. They were sending the last bus around at about 3pm when we got back to Old Town ( to finish the route at 5pm). A couple people had to wait for the next bus at Balboa Park since our trolley bus was full! They won't let you stand. Anyhow, it was fun to listen to the tour operators and all of their recorded songs to keep us entertained. Definitely go.”

---I spoke with our Midway Docent, Terry Kaltenbach, to let him know how much those of you who went on our onsite tour of the Midway appreciated him as our docent both “On Zoom and Onsite.” I’ll follow-up with letting him know of your interest in a second onsite tour next semester.---Thanks to Bob H. for sharing his experience of being in the Navy for 20 years, being a Lt. Commander on a ship similar to the Midway, and then turning to landscapes when he retired. Great stories! I appreciate those who sent me emails commenting about their enjoying hearing about Bob’s experience as well.

Originally, this was planned as an onsite tour to enjoy one of their newest films describing the history and current geology of Mission Trails Regional Park. We were scheduled to view this film on the screen inside the theater located in the Visitor Information Center. The viewing of the film would have included the option to view the film via onsite and/or Zoom (for those who preferred to view it from home). Unless there is a change in the weather, the film will be shown via Zoom only. Ranger Susie will be joining us to provide an introduction and overview of the film.

-Tuesday: This past week I especially enjoyed the holiday festivities in Coronado. The sunset at the beach at the Hotel del Coronado followed by their new 2022 Holiday Light Show was beautiful. Since the Lightshow will continue nightly from 5-9 PM until January 1, I wanted to share this with you so you might be able to enjoy it as well.

-Thursday: Another favorite holiday tradition for me in celebrating the holidays in San Diego is enjoying the beautiful tree and carolers at The Lodge in Torrey Pines, enjoying the lights while driving through downtown Del Mar (and the beach!), and then stopping to enjoy some of the treats and amazing holiday lights at the Del Mar Highland Town Center.

>Tuesday -- Join us for our onsite visit to the Butterfly Farms in Encinitas. The weather is beautiful! We will be able to enjoy one of their last guided tours for this season. Using the Monarch Butterfly as their model, Butterfly Farms is dedicated to the education, conservation, and research of these important pollinators. If at home, you may enjoy watching our prior presentations by Bill Toone who raised the money for the Butterfly Pavilion at the SD Wild Animal Park.

Where: 441 Saxony Road, Encinitas, CA 92024
When: Tuesday, Nov. 8; Sign-in at 10:00
Tour: Guided tour: 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Class ends @ noon.

Clothing: Wear brightly colored clothes to lure butterflies to YOU!
Attractions: Plant type and color are important in attracting butterflies.
Adult butterflies are attracted to red, yellow, orange,
pink, and purple blossoms that are flat-topped or
clustered and have short flower tubes.
Landings on you: They are attracted to the salt in your sweat. Your sweat
can also give them a boost of minerals and proteins to
supplement their diet. Butterflies are even known to be
attracted to tears for similar reasons.
Touching: Be extremely gentle when petting a butterfly.
Butterfly Season: Summer is peak butterfly season; however, there's
some significant butterfly activity in every season.

>Thursday – Ramona has been referred to as “The Heart of San Diego Wine’s Country”. Join us with learning more about Ramona’s vineyards and wineries from, Bill Schweitzer, an owner of a Ramona vineyard as well as a member of Ramona Valley Vineyard Association. If you haven’t been to Ramona in the last 10 years, there has been a lot of expansion with Ramona’s vineyards and wineries. Based on your interest with wine and/or Ramona, Bill will include an interactive activity and individualized recommendations for taking a holiday tour of Ramona and/or Ramona’s wineries during the Holiday Wine Trail. Appendix 1 includes information about Edward’s Vineyards & Cellars.

In honoring the importance of California’s Nov. 8 General Election, information on the ballot is included in Appendix 1. A brief historical overview of The League of Women Voters (LWV) will be included prior to Thursday’s VWV’s presentation. Congratulations to those who have voted!

-Nov. 10 (Th): Join us in examining different types of improvements made in our elections and democracy since LWV’s origin in 1920, what LWV has done to empower voters with our recent elections, as well as LWV’s future plans and work toward empowering voters and defending our democracy. We will learn more about what is being done in San Diego and nationally with their committees, education, and events to “Make Democracy Work.” The nonpartisan information with our LWV presentation and class discussion is meant to (1) provide new insights in the voting process and participation in a democratic society and (2) encourage personal applications and assessments of what you think is important to keep moving forward ‘post elections’ to “Make Democracy Work” individually and collectively.

Thursday: Fred’s Urban Farm-Spring Valley is a ‘salad farm’ in which you can order microgreens, greens, eggs, and fermented products via their ‘Online Marketplace.’ Click Best Sellers to see a sample of their online menu and products. To see for yourself, click on Google Images. Harvest season spans from late September to early December. Harvest time means busy time. Farmers are busy in the fields at all hours of the day collecting the annual crops. Things are busy during harvest time; however, one of their staff members will be joining us via Zoom to tell you more about their farm. See below for their locations and hours. They don’t give tours at this time. In the future, they may be able to provide more information on becoming an ‘Urban Farmer!’ What are your favorite salads and/or fresh foods to eat at this time of year? >Tu (2): Butterfly Farms (Intro) - We will have an introduction via Zoom this week in preparation for next week’s onsite visit to Encinitas. Logistics are also posted below for next week’s onsite tour. Butterfly Farms was established in 2012 due to their concern with the decline of native butterflies and other native pollinators. The mission of Butterfly Farms is to conserve native butterflies and their habitats through education and conservation. Using the Monarch Butterfly as their model, Butterfly Farms is dedicated to the education, conservation, and research of these important pollinators. “Their butterfly free flight house (vivarium) is open to the general public with no reservation needed, for butterfly viewing, April 15 until November 15th, every day from 10 am-3 pm.” (Source) In addition to planting milkweed, see what you can do in your home while watching nature takes it course in 7-10 days:

Landings on you: The main reason butterflies will land on you is because they are
attracted to the salt in your sweat. Your sweat can also give them a
boost of minerals and proteins to supplement their diet. Butterflies are
even known to be attracted to tears for similar reasons.
Touching: It is important to be extremely gentle when petting a butterfly. The
dust you may see on your finger after touching a lepidopteran wing is
actually made up of tiny wing scales (modified hairs). If too many scales
are rubbed away, the wing is more likely to tear or fail.
Butterfly Season: Summer is peak butterfly season with warm, sunny weather that
sends colorful monarchs and swallowtails flitting through our gardens.
You might be surprised to know that there's some significant butterfly
activity in every season.

We’ll start on Tuesday with an introduction to the Channel Islands as a National Park, a historical overview (from creation!), followed by photos and highlights from each of the five Channel Islands. On Thursday, we follow the Ranger's advice to plan a virtual tour that may, or may not, be followed by an onsite tour.

Description: Join us for a one-hour behind-the-scenes tour of The Old Globe to get an inside look at how the spectacular costumes are designed, how impenetrable stone castles are built on the stage, and how a new prop can be made to look 100 years old. Learn about our lighting and sound teams, which celebrities have passed through here, and which shows have gone on to grace the stages of Broadway. Their knowledgeable docents, Michael and Patty, will bring you through all three theatres and artisan craft shops* while sharing fun tidbits and stories of past and present shows, and maybe even share some inside information about upcoming ones!

The Old Globe Theatre is in Balboa Park off El Prado next to The San Diego Museum of Art across the street from the Mingei International Museum. Balboa Park can be accessed from most major freeways via Park Boulevard or the Cabrillo Bridge off 6th and Laurel Avenue. To look up online or GPS directions to The Old Globe, please do not use the address of the theatre. There is only a 10-minute zone at that physical address. For GPS users, use these detailed written directions:
• Driving North: Take Interstate 5 to the Sixth Avenue exit. Turn right (north) and follow Sixth Avenue to Laurel Street. Turn right (east) on Laurel and drive straight into Balboa Park.
• Driving South: Take Interstate 5 into San Diego. Exit at Sassafras Street and follow Kettner Boulevard to Laurel Street (second stop light). Turn left (east) on Laurel and drive straight into Balboa Park.
• Driving East (via Harbor): From Point Loma, take Harbor Drive west from Rosecrans. Turn left onto Laurel Street. Pass Sixth Ave. and drive straight into Balboa Park.
• Driving West: Take Interstate 8 to 163. Go south on 163 and exit at University Avenue. At the light, continue straight along Sixth Avenue to Laurel. Turn left (east) on Laurel and drive straight into Balboa Park.

For handicapped drop-off or 10-minute ticket purchase parking:
From Park Blvd., turn on Village Place and drive into Balboa Park. Turn right onto Old Globe Way and continue past the "Authorized Vehicles" sign until you arrive at the theatre. Patrons are permitted to park in the loading zone adjacent to our plaza for a maximum of 10 minutes.
For all other parking: Free parking is available in various lots throughout Balboa Park just a short 5–10-minute walk to the theatre. The closest parking is available in the Alcazar Lot (though it fills up quickly) followed by the Organ Pavilion Lot (best availability.) Additional parking lots may be found on the south and east sides of Palisades Park, Spanish Village Art Center & Natural History Museum.
The free Balboa Park Tram provides access to Balboa Park from Tram Central at the Inspiration Point Parking Lot (east of Park Blvd. at Presidents Way) to a drop-off station at the Plaza de Panama, a short walk down El Prado from the Globe. Trams leave every 10 to 12 minutes and follow a loop route through the park. More information can be found by calling the Visitor Center at (619) 239-0512.

Description: Mission Trails Regional Park encompasses 7,220 acres of both natural and developed recreational areas. Its rugged hills, valleys and open areas represent San Diego prior to the landing of Cabrillo in San Diego Bay in 1542. Mission Trails Regional Park has been called the third Jewel in the City of San Diego Park System. Starting in 1974, Mission Trails Regional Park has become one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Originally used by the Kumeyaay, the park is the site of the Old Mission Dam, built to store water for the Mission San Diego de Alcala. While in the award-winning Visitor’s Center, enjoy the Art Exhibitions, the Gift Shop, the Center’s Library, films shown in their 94-seat, air-conditioned theater, as well as their outdoor amphitheater and native plant gardens.

After you pass Princess View Dr. (Jack-in-Box on the right-hand corner) go up the hill on Mission Gorge Road. Once you go down the hill after passing the signal at Jackson Drive, the visitor's center will be the first left. Park in the dirt parking lot across from the Visitor’s Center.

Description: Join us in learning what is happening with Birch Aquarium historically and today. Our guest presenter, Kayla Strate, will share with us a broad range of information about the Little Blue Penguins and their exhibit at Birch Aquarium.
(Tu): Birch Aquarium & The Little Blue Penguins - Introduction & History
We will learn about the history of the Birch Aquarium, the distribution of penguins in Antarctica, differences in species with penguins, their social behavior, the uniqueness of Little Blue Penguins, and what our role in conservation could include.
(Th): San Diego Little Penguins & Beyond: Today & Now
We will learn more about the longevity & health of the Little Blue Penguins, their distribution & habitats (in Southern Australia, New Zealand, & Tasmania), physical characteristics & physiology, natural history & behavior, sources of threats, and feeding at the Birch Aquarium.

Description: Kayla Strate, the penguin expert at Birch Aquarium, will be sharing her knowledge and experience of working with their new exhibit of the Little Blue Penguins. These penguins are about a foot tall, the size of a California burrito. They are the smallest penguin the world. This is the first seabird exhibit at the aquarium.

Description: We will learn more about the sale of cocoa from international and local vendors of gourmet chocolate. The presentations will include:

* We will honor the passing of Queen Elizabeth with information on her favorite British chocolate and chocolate cake followed by going on a fun and impressive virtual tour of the largest chocolate museum in Belgium. Luciano will be talking about Italian gourmet chocolates. As a gratefully retired (!) educator, I appreciate his willingness to share what he knows, and enjoys, about Italian chocolates.
Local gourmet chocolate shops will include an update on two of our chocolate tours in 2017 and 2019. They are still some of my favorite onsite tours as they included chocolate treats shared by all!
We’ll end with personal applications and assessments focused on what you have learned about the production and purchasing of gourmet chocolate. For example, what information will you use to determine the quality and value of the gourmet chocolate as gifts for yourself or others during our upcoming holidays?
Join us in exploring ways we can support our local gourmet chocolate vendors who have survived COVID while maintaining their ethical practices, craftsmanship, and quality of gourmet chocolate! As Jennifer Muratore (owner of The Elegant Truffle) wrote on her sign outside her shop in Point Loma:
"A Balanced Diet is Chocolate in Both Hands!"

Description: We learned last week that “gourmet chocolate is often made with cocoa beans that are ethically sourced and bought in small bulk.” On Tuesday, we will learn more about what the growth, production, and sale of cocoa from an international perspective. We also learned last week that gourmet chocolate is “considered to be luxury products that are hand-made by trained chocolatiers or made in small batches to better control quality.” On Thursday, we will learn more about the production and sale of cocoa from local vendors of gourmet chocolate here in San Diego. Based on requests by students, I have expanded our presentation on this topic for a second week. Based on what you have learned via our virtual classes on Zoom, how can you apply what you have learned from an international, national, and local perspective in supporting local vendors of gourmet chocolate, yourself, as well as your selection of potential gifts of gourmet chocolate as we move closer to the holiday season of 2022?
Join us in exploring ways we can support our local gourmet chocolate vendors who have survived COVID… maintained their ethical practices. As Jennifer, the owner of The Elegant Truffle, wrote on her sign outside her shop in Point Loma

I will expand on this week’s topic to include “Rediscovering San Diego’s Refreshing & Delicious Ice Cream Treats” This will include locations and descriptions of some of San Diego’s best when it comes to ice cream! I will show you what I have done so far to get your feedback as well.

I will post a copy of my weekly email as well as my weekly “information packet” on the RSD website prior to sending it out to you. If you are wondering if I have sent the email yet (or missed sending it to you), check to see if I have posted it on my RSD website. Send me a text message (at my phone number below) if you have any questions.
I include the Zoom link in my weekly email. For security purposes, however, I do not include this information in the weekly email that I copy and paste onto my RSD website. If I have not included it in my weekly email, you may need to check a prior week’s email to get the link. If there are any questions or problems with this, please let me know!

There will be some adjustments this semester due to the increase in the class time. I will talk more about this in class as well. This week, for example, I have a guest speaker who will be presenting at 11:15 AM. For now, I will refer to this as Part 2 of our class. We will see how it goes!

Attached and below is information about Zoom. Most students join from their PC, Mac, smartphone, or phone by clicking on the link or phone number sent via email. I use the same Zoom link each semester for each of my classes, so I encourage you to save the handout about Zoom (or information with the Zoom link) as a bookmark, on your desktop, or somewhere that provides easy access to the link.
