Downtown La Jolla Walking Tour

Join us on Thursday for a guided walking tour of downtown La Jolla to explore its historical landmarks that will include shared history and personal stories from our tour guide, Carol, about the history of La Jolla and Ellen B. Scripps.
Introduction to the Walking Tour
Meet at the benches in front of the La Jolla Recreation Center at 615 Prospect St., La Jolla, CA 92037 This is across the street from the Museum of Contemporary Arts at 700 Prospect St., La Jolla, CA 92037.
We will walk down the street to meet our tour guide, Carol Olten, at the cottage for the La Jolla Historical Society at 780 Prospect St., La Jolla, CA 92037. We will then begin exploring some of the historical landmarks in downtown La Jolla. For more information on upcoming events with the La Jolla Historical Society, click here.

On Tuesday, we will be talking about our Summer Highlights as well as our upcoming onsite tour of the Midway with Terry, our prior docent from our onsite tour last February. Summer Highlights from our summer presentations included Mike's Travel Photo tips (from our Walk-Photo Walk in Balboa Park) and his photos from his Travels in Spain. End of Summer Session’s Review, Celebration, & Highlights from our Summer Classes. I only had one response in terms of being interested in a docent-led tour of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies off Torrey Pines Road which would be $10 each ($210 for 21 people).
-Thursday, Aug. 24: (Onsite tour; 10 am to noon)
---We have plenty of free tickets (40!) for both the Tuesday and Thursday RSD classes to join us at the USS Midway. Thanks to everyone who contributed tickets! Let me know by tonight if you plan to join us as I need to make reservations in preparation for our tour.
Parking: The parking lot next to the USS Midway is now $20 for 6 hours. Let me know if you’d like to carpool from a nearby location. The walk from the Sante Fe Depot is 5 blocks, 0.4 miles, and takes 8 minutes to walk.

I've asked Mike to begin by sharing his information and experience with fire prevention and protection (In honor of the recent fires on Maui).
Here are some points on Diaster Planning from information shared in prior RSD classes.
Fire Prevention & Fire Protection (Disaster Planning)
You need to minimally have
1-Gas in your car (always have ½ tank of gas)
2-Gallon of water, per person, per day (for at least 3 days)
3-Go-kit ready with food & 72 hrs. of emergency supplies
4-Stay toward the center of the house away from the exterior walls if can't leave
5-Sign-up for alerts with ReadySanDiego.org.
6-Create Personal Disaster Plan with ReadySanDiego.org.
7-Communicate Personal Disaster Plan with family & friends

Join us in seeing how Mike applied his photo tips (see Appendix 2 & 3) to our smartphone photos.

Wakeel was born in Nigeria. He graduated with a BA in Industrial Engineering from New Mexico State University in 2022 and is starting his career in the technology industry.

---The good news is that Terry, the excellent docent who led us on a tour of the lower decks of the Midway in January, has confirmed that he can lead us in a tour of the upper deck and control tower of the Midway. For that tour, we had enough free tickets from classmates that it was a free tour for everyone.
---The disappointing news is that the staff at the U.S.S. Midway let me know that they would be charging $550 for 20 people to do a tour on Aug. 24 at 10 AM. I‘ll check to see if we could get a discount by ordering tickets online. I hope that we can get more free tickets from classmates. Please let me know if you have any free tickets!

Parking at San Elijo Lagoon & Nature Center
Hi everyone,
Lee just sent a text saying that she had arrived at the parking lot for the San Elijo Lagoon & Nature Center. There are seven parking spaces left at the center. She added that some just came for a morning walk so they may leave by 10:00. Thank you, Le.
Consider the parking lot across the street from the center at the San Elijo Water Campus (2695 Manchester Ave.) as well as the parking lot by the Chevron Gas Station:
Parking: Their parking lot is limited. Drop off your passenger at the Nature Center. Park at this lot at 10:00 and carpool.
Take I-5 to the Manchester Exit and turn East.
Turn left at the first stop light (next to the Chevron Gas Station).

Hi everyone,
Thursday (Feb. 27): Meet onsite at 10:00 to enjoy our docent-led tour of the San Elijo Nature Center by Susan as well as a walk around the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve which is one of the largest remaining coastal wetlands in San Diego County, California. You may plan to enjoy lunch near the ocean or the lagoon after class! Sasan is a retired Science teacher who has also studied Marine Biology.
Parking: Their parking lot is limited. You can drop off your passenger at the Nature Center and then park at this lot so we can carpool. We will leave the parking lot at 10:00 AM.
Take I-5 to the Manchester Exit and turn East. Turn left at the first stop light (next to the Chevron Gas Station). Check out the website for more information on parking! (There is parking across the street from the Nature Center on Manchester.) A few students are going to Ky’s for breakfast to miss the heat and traffic…see below.

--Tuesday (Feb. 18) - Balboa Park Photo Walk & Scavenger Hunt (w/ Mike McMahon) Onsite (10-Noon). Join us in learning about travel and tour photo tips by Mike as we enjoy a walk around Balboa Park and some of its (air-conditioned!) museums. Mike McMahon will lead a photo walk that will provide suggestions on how to get great photos. In addition, there will be free access to several of the most popular Balboa Park museums and attractions – consider taking advantage of them following our class.

I recommend parking behind the Organ Pavilion Lot (best availability). Most museums open at 10 AM so getting there early helps with finding parking.
The closest parking is available in the Alcazar Lot (next to the Mingie Museum and across from the Organ Pavilion; however, it fills up quickly) followed by the Organ Pavilion Lot (best availability).
Additional parking may be found on the south and east sides of the Park in the Palisades, Federal, Spanish Village, and Natural History Museum lots.
You can also park at the VA Hospital for easy access to the heart of Balboa Park via the free tram. (Click the Tram Page for the current operation schedule or see below).
Summary: Visitors will find eleven free parking lots across Balboa Park that offer easy access to cultural institutions, attractions, and experiences with accessible parking spots and designated pick-up and drop-off stops for the Park’s tram. Park in the Inspiration Point parking lot (on the east side of Park Blvd., between Presidents Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center) for easy access to the heart of Balboa Park via the free tram. You can join the RSD classes this Tuesday and Thursday for information about registration as well as an overview of the class. To ensure the safety and security of our online class, I carefully check to see if those joining the class are registered and enrolled for each class.
