Then & Now: A Historical View of Railroads
Presentation by Tom Hay Bauer
Description: In addition to a personal life-long love of trains, Tom Hay Bauer professionally spent 15 years in railroad management. In addition to a historical overview of the many uses of railroads, we will learn about travel with Amtrak around the world. Fellow RSD classmates will share about their “land cruise” along the west coast.
May 25 (Tu): Tom will discuss the history of railroads, focusing on the importance of railroads in the development of a modern United States for transportation of both passengers and freight. Learn how the rails are used to transport passengers and freight. What is being done in response to the impact of the railways along our coastline in areas like Del Mar? What will it take for you to feel safe traveling by rail at this time?
May 27 (Th): Tom will continue with a discussion of Amtrak as both a practical and leisurely form of travel as well as a review of scenic and historic passenger trains around the world. He will also map out a sample Amtrak "land cruise" to match a trip taken by RSD classmates a number of years ago. How do you think scenic and historic passenger trains around the world compare to passenger trains in the United States?

Follow-up to Presentations by Ocearn & Lindsey (Docents)
Hi everyone,
My thanks to Ocearn Johnson (Executive Assistant) and Lindsey Jeu De Vine (Director of Communications) for leading our virtual tours! In addition, a special thanks to Bobbie, her husband, the staff, and all the volunteers that contribute to the quality of care with this amazing animal sanctuary just 25 miles away from downtown San Diego. The quality of care with the animals as well as the grounds/environment was impressive. Beautiful!
You can click on Tuesday’s recording (below). I appreciate that we were able to record both of the presentations as there were some challenges with the video and audio on Tuesday. I’ll let you know when I’ve posted the Thursday’s recording.
Click on recording: May 11 (Tu) - Presentation of Bears (27:55)
Thanks to each of you who were able to enjoy these tours (from the comfort of your home) as well. It was good to hear from Ocearn that the spring and fall seasons are especially nice for observing the animals when they are more active.
Thanks to Luciano for his trivia questions as well as sharing the video of Bobbie’s presence in which she shared her concern that John Cox's 'Meet the Beast' tour stop in San Diego included a live bear.
Click: https://youtu.be/YpW0FWFtrOw (2:35)
For me, this was another example of how easy it is to lose sight of the impact we as humans have on exotic animals and how important it is to share this understanding with others.
Learning more about the exploitations of exotic animals and possibilities of care with rescue animal sanctuaries, I’ve added some videos (below) to expand on what we’ve learned with our virtual tours via Zoom.
Check out to see which of the videos listed below are of interest to you. I especially enjoyed the first video with its photography and information by the founder and owner, Bobbie Brink.

Lions, Tigers, & Bears
Animal Keeper/Docent: Ocearn Johnson
Description: Lions Tigers & Bears is an exotic animal rescue and big cat sanctuary located on the edge of the Cleveland National Forest just 45 minutes from downtown San Diego. This rescue sanctuary provides peace and tranquility for more than 60 rescued exotic animals (including big cats and bears) so they can “live the rest of their lives with dignity in a caring, safe and natural environment.” Ocearn Johnson, one of their animal keepers, will virtually introduce us to a select rescue animal on each day, provide information about the sanctuary, and share with us how they are working to end the Exotic Animal Trade.
RSD-Tu: We will meet and learn about a select BEAR from their sanctuary.
RSD-Th: We will meet and learn about a select TIGER CAT from their sanctuary.

Lions, Tigers, & Bears
Docent/Keeper: Ocearn Johnson
Enjoy this short video: https://www.lionstigersandbears.org/

Also, let me know if you have any questions about Mike’s upcoming presentation on Computer Tips and Searches on May 4 & 6.
Our Tuesday AND Thursday presentations for Lyons, Tigers, & Bears on Zoom are coming up in three weeks. They do not have a limit on the number of participants we can have on Zoom so you are welcome to invite friends and family. Just let me know so I can make a list of “guests” as a safeguard to ensure security.
I’m looking forward to our presentation next week by the docents from the San Diego Museum of Art. I’d encourage you to check out their website to see what is happening with their current exhibits. We will be learning about their past exhibit, Masters of Photography, The Garner Collection, which was recommended by Chai Hui. This exhibit will be open to the public again at the end of the year. Our docents will be able to confirm the exact dates.
Thanks to each of you for your participation, questions, and recommendations. Great discussion and feedback with tips for follow-ups!

Presenters: Courtney Flanagan & Fellow SDMA Docents
Description: Masters of Photography – The Garner Collection emphasizes iconic images by some of the most famous photographers from the 20th century to the present from local collectors Cam and Wanda Garner. Diverse in subject, style, photographic medium, and chronology, their collection of pictures presents an occasion to reflect on photography’s role in history and society and to consider its future trajectory. The exhibition is grouped thematically into three sections: Reflections on Nature, Things as They Are, and Manipulating Reality.
-Apr. 27 (Tu): Overview of current, past, and future exhibits at Balboa Park’s Museum of Art followed by a presentation on the thematical grouping, Reflections on Nature, which presents a variety of landscapes that includes work by the acclaimed Ansel Adams and Minor White, and organic aesthetics.
-Apr. 29 (Th): The presentation will focus on the second thematical grouping, Things as They Are, which analyzes documents of the city, society, and conflict with familiar examples from Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The final grouping, Manipulating Reality, looks at expressions of abstraction and allegory in the medium from early 20th-century work by Frank Eugene, to the cinematic dreamscapes of Gregory Crewdson.

Hi everyone,
RSD-Tuesday Part 2 Enrollment: If you are receiving this email, it means that you are enrolled in Part 2 of my RSD-Tuesday classes (4/12/21 to 6/11/21). Thank you!
Between the poll in Zoom on Tuesday and the breakout rooms in Zoom on Thursday, you all did a great job with your feedback and interactions. Thanks, Mike for taking the lead with setting this up on Tuesday and Thursday. Thanks, Tom (and Luciano) for your support with the class discussions on Tuesday. We are coming up on our one-year anniversary (on March 23) with our SDCE and RSD classes being on Zoom. Great job, everyone!
Presentation (this Tues/next Thurs.): Travel Photography – Portugal!
Presenter: Mike McMahon
Description: Mike will show his photos and videos from a tour of Portugal. More importantly, he’ll provide you with tips on how to make your own travel photos look great! Photo planning will be discussed along with some equipment suggestions. Review and expand on your applications and creative expressions from lessons learned about travel photography. Share plans or creative ideas for possible travels (“Post-COVID”) locally, nationally, or internationally that you may be starting to plan or creatively imagine while still keeping you and others health and safety in mind!
>Tues. March 16 - We will cover the journey from Lisbon to locations in the interior of Portugal.
>Thur. March 25 - More of Portugal, ending in Porto. Travel photo tips included!
Presentation (this Th./next Tu): Art in 1500–1600: Parallel Worlds-–East vs. West
Presenter: Chai-Hui Shih
Description: We will enjoy viewing and learning about differences in the artworks selected from the collection of the San Diego Museum of Art during the time period of 1500 to 1600 CE. These 100 years overlap with the High Renaissance in Europe, the Ming Dynasty in China, and the Mughal Empire in India. Chai Hui Shin will guide us in comparing and contrasting differences in the subject matters, artistic tastes, and art forms from the selected artworks to find out if the East and West were indeed parallel worlds with respect to Art or if they share some common ground.
>Mar. 18 (Th): Introduction of a few artworks prior to 1500 in Europe, Ming Dynasty in China, and Sultanate in India. We will visit artworks into the 1500s to examine how the artistic trends developed in these regions.
>Mar. 23 (Tu): We will continue to examine and discuss the artistic trends into the 1500s by comparing the High Renaissance and its later trends, Ming Dynasty, and Mughal Empire. All were in their heydays of Artistic development!

Presentation by DR. LI-RONG LILLY CHENG, Director
San Diego Chinese Cultural Center; San Diego State University
Hi everyone,
I've made revisions to the info packet (posted on our website on Monday). It includes a link to Dr. Cheng's book (pg. 3). Thanks to those of you who let me know you didn't receive the email. When in doubt, be sure to check our website (RSDDonna.org) as a back-up. Yes, a copy of this email is posted on our course website under the tab for Emails.
Also, I use the SAME ZOOM LINK for ALL my classes so I encourage you to bookmark it or download a copy of it onto your desktop! Remind me to show you how I create a bookmark (using Google Chrome) on Thursday!
The personal application questions (pgs. 17 & 18) include information about the Chinese Zodiac that includes links to identify your animal (based on the year you were born) as well as the Chinese restaurants she recommended in class today. There is a link to information about the Five Elements but I didn't see a link on the Chinese Yellow Calendar for identifying your element. More to come on Thursday!
Registration continues. I requested that the cap be increased to 55 but will ask it to be increased to 60. That will be the limit so be sure to get enrolled in the Tuesday and/or Thursday classes before the cap on enrollments is reached! If you have problems getting 'registered' with mySDCCD or 'enrolled' in my classes, let me know. Thanks to all who have already enrolled!
Check it out. It would be fun to share your Chinese Animal on Chat this Thursday. I'm an Ox...so it's my year!
Enjoy!

Hi everyone,
Thanks to each of you who let me know that you didn't get my RSD email for this week. If you are receiving this email, it means that you are enrolled in my RSD Tuesday and/or Thursday class.
I've sent the last 4 hours going through my roll books making sure that I have added all the BRAND-NEW RSD students as well as returning RSD students to my combined email list. If you know of anyone who didn't get this email, please let me know.
For those of you who are new, you can check the emails posted on my RSD website to see if you have missed anything. Whenever possible, I encourage my RSD students to sign up for both the Tuesday and Thursday RSD classes as the subject matter will be different.
The following descriptions are an example of the differences between Tuesday and Thursday presentations on Alexa by Mike McMahon. For more information, see the email at the bottom that I have forwarded to everyone in my RSD Tuesday and Thursday classes.
-Feb. 9 (Tu)-Part 1: Understanding voice-activated smart devices…do they spy on me?
Thanks to each of you who shared your personal experience with Alexa during the class discussion from 10:00 - 10:30 (that followed Mike's presentation). For those of you who are new, Mike generally has a "hard stop" (his words) on Tuesdays at 10:00. This Thursday, he will be able to stay for the class discussion from 10:00 to 10:30 to answer any further questions you might have about this week's topic.
The focus on Tuesday (Part 1) is often an introduction to the weekly topics. Mike often refers to this as "the essentials".
The focus on Thursday (Part 2) is often an expansion of Tuesday's presentation. This often includes additional information on your "personal application and assessment" (my words) of the weekly topic.
I generally won't use the description of Part 1 and Part 2 in describing the differences in the class as your registration includes enrolling in both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Tuesday class as well as Part 1 and Part 2 of the Thursday class. I will explain this further in your upcoming classes.

2021 Chinese New Year Celebrations (January 21 and February 20).
I am happy to announce that the Director of the San Diego Historical Museum will be our docent on BOTH Tuesday and Thursday. This took some extra work on everyone's part that was involved with this arrangement. I know the Director from one of our prior RSD tours at the San Diego Museum of Art. I consider her to be one of the best docents I have had in the almost 500 tours I have done with RSD so I hope that you will each be able to join us in learning more about this Chinese holiday as well as the history and heritage associated with it.
This Friday and Monday are holidays so there will not be any classes with the San Diego College of Continuing Education (our new name!).
Registration for our 2021 Spring Semester continues. See below for a listing of all of my classes and the Class Numbers.
For those of you who are BRAND NEW, I encourage everyone to check their emails prior to the class to see if there have been any changes. This may be due to a docent (or myself) being sick, but this is VERY rare.
As a reminder, the contents of this email are posted on our RSD website.

Description: Introducing relaxation and mindfulness practices as a low-cost method of providing support for the anxiety and mood symptoms during times of crisis such as the current global pandemic caused by COVID-19.
People who have completed the structured program utilized in this class, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and/or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), have shown improvements in anxiety, depression, and pain as well as structural and functional brain changes.
I encourage you to utilize this unique time of increased opportunities to learn via Zoom in your home. This class will focus on three areas of information:
(1) strengthening your wellness skills related to healthy living during these challenging times,
(2) Integrating relaxation and mindful practices into your daily routine, and
(3) creating (in whatever way possible) supportive activities and interactions that allow you to safely care for yourself and others with enjoyment and ease!
