End of Semester Celebration
RSD - January 25 & 27, 2022
Hi everyone,
>Last Week
Mike shared with us some tips for Scanning and Sharing Photos (and our vaccination cards!). Let’s see how we do with sending photos individually and/or with links to multiple photos. Thanks to all of you who joined us on Friday to learn about our increasing use of QR Codes. After two years of regular presentations focused on increasing our technical skills (in retirement!), our focus will be on staying connected with Mike via emails, newsletters, Carlsbad presentations, and private consultations. What a gift he has been. As said many times, he will be missed. Thank you, Mike!

· Watch his YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/photomcman
· Contact Mike via his email: mike.techguy@gmail.com
· Email Mike if you would like to attend his Carlsbad presentation this Wednesday, YouTube Extras, from 2-3:15 PM...onsite or on Zoom!
>This Week
We will be reviewing and celebrating our past presentations. What have you learned and enjoyed? What would you like to learn and enjoy in our upcoming semester? As we hear frequently (especially if you’re watching KPBS-2), it’s all about lifelong learning…including learning from each other! So, what are some tidbits, stories, and personal experiences that you would add to our presentations as we celebrate the end of our Fall semester as well as our upcoming Spring semester… via Zoom…for free! This is a chance for us to enjoy learning from each other with our shared “RSD Voices” this week! I look forward to hearing what you would like to “Rediscover about San Diego & Beyond” this Spring.
>Next Week
Registration and orientation to our 2022 Spring semester! My thanks to each of you who have enrolled. I began teaching RSD classes in the Fall of 2015 – 7 years – almost 300 weeks of “RSD Tours & Topics” – onsite and on Zoom! 2021 RSD Holiday Photos & San Diego Holiday Lights
December 24, 2021
Shared holiday traditions, collections, decorations, and crafts
for your holiday enjoyment!
No class next week. Our December Break ends on Monday, Jan.3.
Hi everyone,
After last night's rain and predictions of rain to follow, I found myself adding some words to this familiar holiday song:
“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”
…with rain, rain, and more rain to come!
To add a little brightness to this rainy holiday season, I wanted to share some of the photos and videos I’ve received from your classmates as well as a few ideas of what you might enjoy (rain or shine) with viewing our holiday lights and decorations during our remaining 2021 holiday break. See attached.
The first few pages include some great photos and videos shared by Tom K dressed as Santa, a few of Lea’s favorite nutcrackers, Judy’s holiday decorations (geared to her two granddaughters)., Luciano and Jay’s home and holiday decorations, and Donna’s version of a candy cane wreath originally shown by the SD Floral Association. Watch for holiday traditions, collections, decorations, and crafts enjoyed this year by each of them. Be sure to click on the video by Luciano and Jay (at the end of the handout). It is filled with beautiful images and creative ideas with the holiday décor in their home. The video was designed to share with family and friends (internationally and locally). It's 6 minutes of beautiful decor and home projects that I hope you enjoy as much as I did. Thanks to each of you for sharing what you have created and enjoyed during these challenging times!
This is followed by a guide to San Diego 2021 Holiday Lights by 10 News. I’ve been enjoying viewing some of our San Diego Holiday Lights using this clear and concise guide and map. Some of this enjoyment has been viewing our SD holiday lights and decorations around town as well as virtually. I wanted to share this with you so you can continue seeing our holiday lights (live or virtually) that you may have missed due to the rain and/or other factors.
I’ve ended with a description of my favorite “Tour of Holiday Lights” (that’s become a tradition, when possible!). This year it has been in smaller pieces! It begins with The Lodge of Torrey Pines (at sunset), driving over to the Del Mar Highland Town Center to view the holiday lights (with themes of a “California Christmas” that includes surfing penguins) as well as the Del Mar Village (downtown lights and Christmas tree). It ends with enjoying a walk (by the ocean) or a restaurant (with an ocean view) in Del Mar or Cardiff. Whatever it is that feels safe and enjoyable for you.
Another tradition I enjoy seeing in San Diego is the holiday decorations at the Brigantine Restaurant in La Mesa. The person who does the holiday decoration for the Brigantine told me (several years ago!) that the Brigantine in La Mesa was her favorite for the holiday decorations she’s created with the Brigantine Restaurants.
How about you? Any traditions? Favorites? What have you been able to enjoy this year…or in previous years?!
See you the first week in January of 2022.
Happy Holidays to each of you!
Donna

Museum of Photographic Arts - Balboa Park
Hi everyone,
Kevin will give us a virtual tour of MOPA’s exhibit, Beyond Boundaries, on Jan. 11 & 13. This will allow more time for Kevin to expand on his presentation, and critique, of Aaron Siskind’s exhibit.
>RSD-Tu: As seen on our calendar, Kevin Linde, Manager of Adult and Digital Engagement at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), gave us a virtual tour of their exhibit, Aaron Siskind: Mid Century Modern, which focuses on photographs made by Aaron Siskind during the late 1940s and 1950s while he was interacting with the major figures of mid-twentieth-century painting. Information from Kevin about Siskind’s photos included Siskind’s focus on the viewer’s experience and feelings when viewing his photos. In addition to Kevin’s comments about the lighting and texture of Siskind’s photos, information by Kevin included:
- “The drama of the object”
- “The relationship of the objects”
- “Change your angle”
- “The beauty is in the details”
>RSD-Th: Kevin will apply information from his videos, Photo 101, to Aaron Suskind’s photos shown to us on Tuesday. See attached for a handout with links to Kevin’s videos. If possible, listen to his videos prior to his presentation. Based on my experience, Kevin’s ability to share his expertise while also encouraging your creative critiques of photos is Kevin at his best! I think you’ll agree!

Presentation by Eric Christensen
Thursday – Oct. 14, 2021
Hi everyone,
>Last Week
Elizabeth Schwarz, Family Service Advisor with Singing Hills Memorial Park, answered questions and added information on the benefits of pre-planning for mortuary and funeral arrangements. Chia-Hui shared her favorite examples of Modern & Contemporary Art. This included examples from the permanent collection of art at the San Diego Museum of Art. There is free admission to the San Diego Museum of Art for San Diego County Residents (with ID) on the 3rd Tuesday, Oct. 19, of this month.
>This Week
-Tuesday (Oct.12) - Tom’s presentation will focus on The AC/DC of Electric Cars. The future of cars is electric – but how soon? Ford says all vehicles sold in Europe will be electric by 2030 and VW says 70% of its sales will be electric by 2030. General Motors says it will make only electric vehicles by 2035. What are governments around the world doing to promote electric vehicles? Why? Why not?
Tom speaks from his experience as owner of two Electric Vehicles (EVs). He will explore the 3 main types of EVs, the advantages and disadvantages of EVs compared with traditional gasoline cars, and the current and future marketplace for EVs.
-Thursday (Oct. 14) - Eric will provide a historical overview of our electrical power sources beginning with Benjamin Franklin’s kite experiments, to Nikola Tesla vs. Thomas Edison (AC vs. DC), as well as future projections that transformers could revolutionize our power grids. We will learn about transformers in your smartphones, laptops, toothbrushes, etc. Eric’s practical applications of Our Power Systems Today will include Energy Efficient and Cost Saving Tips in your homes. Join us in expanding your knowledge of Cost-Saving Tips for your home today.

Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021 (Part 2)
Hi everyone,
>Last week
-RSD-Tu (Sept.28): Chai-Hui presented Symphony of Color (Part 1) with selected art pieces from the SD Museum of Art’s permanent art collection to illustrate Ancient to Modern and Contemporary Art. It was her (and our) “first adventure into modern art.”
-RSD-Th (Sept. 30): Mike McMahon continued his presentation on issues related to Safe Computing (Part 2) focusing on practical applications (passwords, second-factor authentication, etc.) that we can use to best protect ourselves from computing threats.
>This Week
-RSD-Tu (Oct. 5) - Elizabeth Schwarz, Family Service Advisor, will expand on the presentation by Syltoya Sterling by answering questions and adding information on the benefits of pre-planning for mortuary and funeral arrangements based on her select training. licensing, and professional experience. We will learn why Syltoya re-directed some of our questions to be answered by Elizabeth Schwarz during our presentation on Singing Hills Memorial Park.
-RSD-Th (Oct. 7) - Chia-Hui will continue to share and critique some of her favorite examples of art in Part 2 of her presentation on ‘The Importance & Symphony of Color with Modern & Contemporary Art.’ Chia-Hui will also identify the art in her presentation that you can see when you visit the San Diego Museum of Art. There is free admission to the San Diego Museum of Art for San Diego County Residents (with ID) on the third Tuesday of each month.
>Next Week
-RSD-Tu (Oct.12) - Our Thursday presentation will include information on the history and future “AC vs. DC” in our homes. Tom’s presentation will focus on "The AC and DC of Electric Cars. The future of cars is electric – but how soon?
How many electric cars do you project will be on the road in America by 2025? (Yes, in a little over 3 years!) Ford says all vehicles sold in Europe will be electric by 2030 and VW says 70% of its sales will be electric by 2030. General Motors says it will make only electric vehicles by 2035. What are governments around the world doing to promote electric vehicles? Why?
Tom speaks from his experience as owner of two Electric Vehicles (EVs). He will explore the 3 main types of EVs, the advantages and disadvantages of EVs compared with traditional gasoline cars, the current and future marketplace for EVs, and the impact of EVs on climate change and the environment."
-RSD-Th (Oct. 14) - Eric Christensen, Owner and Engineering/Sales Consultant of ARA Enterprises in Denver, Colorado, is a great example of the value of the presentation lies with the presenter as well as the topic. As one writer wrote, “There are billions of transformers on the planet—in your smartphone, your laptop, your toothbrush, and elsewhere; isn't it time we appreciated them a bit more?” Eric will provide a historical overview of our electrical power sources beginning with Benjamin Franklin’s kite experiments, to Nikola Tesla vs. Thomas Edison (“AC vs. BC”), as well as ‘future projections that solid-state transformers could revolutionize our power grids.’ With a focus on the practical application of transformers used in our homes, Eric will expand on Tom’s presentation about ‘AC vs. DC with Electric Cars’ by adding some Energy Efficient and Cost Saving Tips within our homes and our ‘Power Systems Today!’ He might even share a picture of a hobby that he and his wife enjoy together – and I bet you won’t be able to guess what it is! Join me with sharing my appreciation of the time Eric has spent talking with Tom and me about our RSD interests, understanding of our Power Systems today, and what’s ahead!

Sept. 14 (RSD-Tu) - Presentation by Tom Hay Bauer
Sept. 16 (RSD-Th) - Presentation by Mike Boyle
Hi Everyone,
>Last week:
Thanks for all the feedback last week in terms. Mike and I have been working hard with putting everything together. As we discussed, I think this semester is especially important as we don’t know what the future holds with onsite and Zoom classes. I know that many of you have filled out the survey, however, I will be sending it for those of you who haven’t!

-RSD-Tu (Sept. 13) - AARP Smart Driver™ Education by Tom Hay Bauer.
Description: Tom will be providing an overview of the AARP Programs that include the Smart Driver™ Education, Smart DriverTEK™ (on new vehicle technology), and CarFit (to improve your safety and comfort behind the wheel). Tom will be sharing with us information from his knowledge and experience as a trained volunteer instructor with the AARP curriculum for Smart Driver™ Education which enables you to receive a discount with your insurance with proof of your completion of the California Mature Driver Improvement Course. Join us in learning what AARP has to offer with safe and comfortable driving.
-RSD-Th (Sept. 15) - Freight Shuttle Xpress (Part 2*) by Mike Boyle.
Description Our U.S. Dept. of Transportation (US DOT) projects that our country’s population will grow by 70 million over the next 30 years. With an ever-increasing population in the city of San Diego, we live in a region where housing grows more costly, the automobile is a household’s second greatest expense, and our current transit systems in the City of San Diego account for only 4% of its trips. Our increasing population and road congestion (already at a high level) affect our productivity, economy, and quality of life. US DOT has concluded that our country’s transportation systems require innovation to avoid worsening and future breakdowns. Learn why the non-profit California Infrastructure Institute advocates evaluation of new technology to address growing problems with congestion, emissions, productivity, and social inequality. (See Appendix 1 for information from Part 1 of Mike’s presentation on Thursday, Aug. 19.)
>Next week
-Description: RSD-Tu (Sept. 21) - We are hearing a lot about the impact of COVID on “Front line workers” in our hospitals, medical facilities, and skilled nursing facilities. Next week we will learn about what is happening with an upcoming international conference with the leadership of staff working within a network of resources and services focused on Dignity of Care. We all know the importance of pre-planning and preparation. What is it that these international members consider important with making a difference in caring for others? How does that relate to our RSD class here in San Diego? More to come!
-Description: RSD-Th (Sept. 23) – The Family Service Provider, Syltoya Sterling, at the Singing Hills Memorial Park in El Cajon will be giving us a virtual park tour of various parts of their beautiful and peaceful Memorial Park and the surrounding “wilderness” area. Our tour will include a historical overview of their ownership and leadership. I’ll be posting photos on our website of the beauty I enjoyed when I went for my first visit. We will learn what makes this Memorial Park so unique and peaceful. In one tree, my friend counted 50 windchimes – each donated by a family member. The cool breeze sounds of wind chimes in the air and waterfall, as well as the surrounding beauty of trees, grass, and rolling hills was a welcome break from our recent heat and humidity.
