Emotional regulation is an aspect of development for children to identify and manage the emotions they experience. For a preschool population, emotional regulation is supported with parents/caregivers through Co-Regulation. Children experience big emotions in their first 3 years of life and learn strategies along the way for managing their emotions and being able to recognize how they feel.
We can all feel times of dysregulation. It is helpful to recognize these moments to help introduce a strategy for returning to a calm state. Examples of dysregulation can include: being overly upset, being frustrated, and being in an excited state. The earlier we intervene with dysregulation the easier it can be to return to a regulated state.
