Occupational therapists (OTs) can play a role in supporting school readiness by helping children develop the skills they need to participate and succeed in a classroom environment. Check out these fun activities and strategies to try out before your child starts or goes back to school!
We recognize that every child enters school with a different skill set! There is no 'checklist' for school readiness - the below are just tips and tricks for consideration.
Boots and Shoes: pick shoes that are easy to slip on or have velcro
Pants: have you child wear elastic waist bands that are loose fitting. This makes it easier for them be independent with taking them on/off at bathroom breaks
Jackets/Coats: send you child in coats that have large, sturdy sippers. Add a key chain with a large grip to their zippers to make it easier to grasp and pull.
Hats: pick hats that are easy to pull on or have a velcro strap
Backpacks: choose a backpack that is large enough to hold lunch bag, agenda and sometimes spare change of clothes. Make sure backpack has a sturdy zipper or add a big keychain to make it easier to pull the zipper
Lunch bag and Containers: when choosing a lunch bag, pick something that is large enough to hold lunch and snack foods. Pack plastic or metal drink container with flip up straw. Snip corners of pre-packaged foods (granola bars, fruit snacks) to make it easier for opening. Pack lunch bag with easy to open plastic containers that your child is familiar with.
Have a picnic using the containers and lunch pail you plan to use for school. Practice opening lunch pail and containers so the child is familiar with them when they start school.
