Start: Guardian Ruins, Mawera

Herbert leads the investigations of the Mawera ruins but has no idea what lies inside. Help him uncover the secret... if there is one at all.

Parts of this quest are required to progress in “The Phoenix from the Ashes” and “Aoroa Challenge.”

Stage 1 - Revive 4 Fossils

Herbert won’t let you into the ruins until you’ve revived four Fossils. You can find their locations in the Ruin Maniac overview.

Stage 2 - The Ruins of Mawera

Enter the ruins and watch a cutscene to learn more about the interior of the ruins.

Stage 3 - Visit Philipp in Paiata

To learn more about the inscriptions, you’ll need to visit Herbert’s friend Philipp in Paiata. Follow the quest “Aoroa Challenge” until you reach Paiata. You’ll find Philipp in the house left of the Pokémon Center.

Stage 4 - Follow Philipp into the Cave

Follow Philipp into the cave north of Paiata. A new cutscene will play, revealing more about his ancestors’ records.

Stage 5 - Report Back to Herbert

Fly back to Mawera and tell Herbert what you’ve discovered in Paiata. He will also give you an Iron Ball, which will be important for the continuation of this quest.

Stage 6/7/8 - Investigate the 3 Gravestones - Catch the 3 Guardians

You need to investigate the three gravestones located in different parts of the region. According to Philipp’s notes, using specific items will trigger something at each gravestone:

In Taipuia’s town center: place a Hard Stone

In Paiata’s town center: place an Ice Stone

On Route 16, high in the western mountains: place the Iron Ball

At each gravestone, an Unown will appear, revealing a hidden cave entrance. Enter each cave and catch the three Guardian Pokémon. Then return to the Guardian Ruins in Mawera.

Stage 9 - Find the Passage

When you return to the Mawera Ruins, you’ll notice a hole in the stone wall. Step through and enter the inner chamber. Herbert is already waiting there. You’ll need to remove obstacles to advance deeper into the ruins — this can be done by having the correct Guardian Pokémon at the front of your party and interacting with the matching statue.

Stage 10 - Open the Gates

In the next chamber, you’ll find two gates — one on the left and one on the right. You’ll need to solve the puzzle for the remaining Guardian Pokémon. The two rooms contain Regidrago and Regieleki. The puzzle hints at the starting letters of their names: D and E. Catch Unown D and Unown E to open the gates.

Stage 11/12 - Catch the 2 Guardians

Catch Regidrago and Regieleki to unlock the final section of the ruins.

Stage 13 - Open the Gate

After a short conversation with Herbert, you’ll need to open the final gate. To do so, you must have all caught Guardian Pokémon in your team.

Stage 14 - Catch the Primordial Giant

In the deepest part of the ruins lies Regigigas. Catch it to complete the final trial.

Stage 15 - Talk to Herbert

Speak with Herbert near the exit of the ruins to finish the quest and unlock all Elemental Charms.
