In the Challenge Version of Pokémon Hero Legacy, players can customize their experience by enabling various gameplay settings before starting a new game. The Challenge Version is a separate game executable called "Pokémon Hero Legacy CV" and therefore uses its own save file.
When starting a new game, the following restrictions and settings can be freely selected and combined. Once the game has begun, these settings cannot be changed.
Randomizer: Randomizes Pokémon in trainer battles, wild encounters, and events. The following sub-options can be enabled or disabled individually:
Wild Pokémon
Trainer Pokémon
Gift Pokémon
Separate Legendaries (ON = Legendary Pokémon remain unchanged)
Similar Strength (ON = The original Pokémon and its randomized replacement will have similar base stats, preventing situations such as Caterpie being replaced by Arceus)
Permafaint: Defeated Pokémon can no longer be used. If all Pokémon in the player's party are defeated, the challenge can continue with other Pokémon.
No White-Out: If all Pokémon in the player's party are defeated, the challenge ends immediately. It is not possible to resume the challenge.
One Capture per Map: Only the first Pokémon encountered in each area may be caught. The following sub-options are available:
Shiny Clause: Shiny Pokémon can still be caught even when One Capture is enabled.
Dupes Clause: Evolutions of Pokémon the player has already caught do not count as the first encounter in an area.
Gift Clause: Gift Pokémon and Eggs do not count as the first encounter in an area.
Monotype Mode: The player must restrict their team to a single type and cannot catch or use Pokémon of any other type. The following default rules apply and cannot be changed:
Starter Pokémon: If the selected type does not match any of the available starter Pokémon, the player starts with a Pokémon of the selected type.
Evolution: If the player has a Pokémon that only gains the selected type upon evolving, it can still be used in the team. (e.g. In a Steel-type Monotype run, Riolu can be used even though only Lucario gains the Steel type.)
Evolution: If a Pokémon loses the selected type upon evolving, it cannot evolve. (e.g. In a Normal-type Monotype run, Azurill can be caught but cannot evolve into Marill, which is a Water/Fairy-type Pokémon.)
Avoid combining Monotype Mode with the Randomizer.
Trainer Scaling: Increases the level of all Trainer Pokémon by +2, improves their movesets, and gives them a chance to hold an item.
Hardcore Mode: All Pokémon, both the player's and opponents', have 31 IVs in every stat. EVs are completely disabled.
Limited Healing: Limits the number of times the player can heal at Pokémon Centers and healing NPCs. Settings from 1 to 5 heals are available.
No Pokémon Centers: Pokémon Centers and healing NPCs cannot be used to heal Pokémon. Healing through items or in certain story-related situations is still possible.
Item Restrictions: Prevents the use of X Items and limits the use of Max Potions to 2 and Revives to 1 per battle.
No Items in Trainer Battles: Items cannot be used during Trainer battles.
Forced Nicknames: Forces the player to give every Pokémon a nickname.
Forced Set Battle Style: The option to switch Pokémon after defeating an opponent's Pokémon is not displayed.
Species Clause: The player cannot have two Pokémon of the same species in their party, encouraging greater team diversity.
No Legendaries: Legendary Pokémon cannot be caught or used in battle.
Please note:
Depending on the selected Challenge Modes, it may not be possible to complete every quest in the game and some features may be disabled, limited or not working correctly. However, thanks to several adjustments made specifically for this version, the main story and the main post-game story remain fully completable.
The following changes have been made compared to the main game:
New Game+ is not available.
Depending on the selected Challenge Modes, certain side quests may not be completable (for example, enabling One Capture may prevent the player from catching Pokémon required for quest-related trades).
Changes to the quest House of the Dragon:
Stage 7 is skipped. Catching 10 Dragon-type Pokémon is no longer required.
Changes to the quest The Phoenix from the Ashes:
Stage 3 is skipped. Trading 5 Pokémon with Team Rocket members is no longer required.
Changes to the quest Tree!:
Stage 3 is skipped. Trading for Skarmory is no longer required.
Changes to the quest The Hero's Legacy:
Suicune: Catching Suicune is no longer required. Instead, interact with the Suicune statue in Porington City.
Rayquaza: Defeat Amalia in Tarakona City without needing to catch Rayquaza.
Celebi: Complete the time-travel sequence without needing to catch Celebi.
Xerneas: Catching Xerneas is no longer required. Complete the quest Let There Be Litwick and then speak with Ziva.
Changes to the quest Let There Be Litwick:
Litwick, Lampent, and Chandelure no longer need to be in the player's party to progress through the quest. After speaking with Ziva, they will appear outside the castle. Interacting with them changes the room in the crypt:
Litwick = 1
Lampent = 2
Chandelure = 3
Any blue candle outside = 4
