Theme: Maintaining control at the net

Goal:

Hold back the opponent

No risk of smash

📊 WEEK 6 – DEFENDING UNDER PRESSURE (WALL + LOB)


🎯 Main goal of week 6

Players can control the ball off the wall under pressure and play a functional defensive lob.


📚 Player Learning Objectives

Correct defensive position (1–2 meters behind the service line)

Estimate the wall (height, speed, direction)

Low body position when defending

Playing the lob with sufficient height and depth

Remaining calm under pressure


🎓 Trainee Learning Objective

Correctly analyze defensive technique (GRASS)

Players learn to buy time instead of forcing


Limit coaching to 2–3 key sentences

Create realistic pressure in a match


📍 TRAINING 1 – BASIC WALL CONTROL (2 hours)

1️⃣ Observation Assignment

Observe 2 players in a defensive situation.

Observe

Do they bend their knees?


Do they wait on the wall or do they walk too early?


Does their racket stay in front of their body?

Decide

Do they choose a safe ball?


Or do they try to force the ball immediately?


Execute

Did they hit the ball low?


Control instead of strength?


Feedback

Was the goal to gain time?


Did you succeed?


2️⃣ Exercise – Cross Wall Defense

Setup:

Coach at the net

Player at the back

Coach plays a controlled bandeja. Player defends along the back wall and returns a neutral ball.

Assignment: 10 controlled defenses in a row.


Coaching phrases

“Wait on the wall.”


“Squat low.”


“Play high and deep.”


“Gaining time is success.”

📍 TRAINING 2 – LOB UNDER PRESSURE (2 hours)

Theme: Defensive Lob


Warm-up

Rally at the back with a mandatory lob after 3 shots. Focus: Height > Speed

Drill: Pressure Situation

Player A at the net

Player B at the back

A plays a pressing volley. B must defend along the wall and play the lob.

After the lob, recover your position.

Common Mistakes

❌ Lob too flat

❌ Hitting too quickly

❌ Not recovering

Correction:

“More under the ball.”


“Aim higher.”


“Return immediately after your shot.”


📍 TRAINING 3 – DEFENSE FOCUS GAMEPLAY (2 hours)

Theme: Starting the point on defense

Ground format: Each rally starts with the coach at the net.

The point counts double when: ✔ Defense via the wall ✔ Lob played correctly ✔ Team regains position

Goal: Players learn that defense is part of winning.
