She married Leslie Mills on May 30th 1845. Two witnesses signed the register: a young gardener from down the street and Martha Munro (who made an “X” in the register.)
Everything changed after Leslie died. Old Martha was also gone, which meant that Jane assumed her place as Matriarch of the Mills family.
They were living two blocks to the North, in 1869, and far to the North in St Asaph’s parish by ’71. Twenty-three year old Ellen was finally living with her mother when the census was taken. Two of her younger sisters were married. Mary and her husband, Captain Henry Martin of the 26th regiment, ere visiting that day. Martha Jane had moved out, to become the wife of an Irish house painter, but had sent her infant son Robert Cross to live with “Gramma.”
