Our Vancouver Genealogy clipping from the Maple Ridge NEWS, Wednesday August 29, 2001, about the Yennadon Scout Hall, in Maple Ridge.
The article below pertains to one of the three acres in that my grandfather, John Henry Cross, gave to my mother (Della May Cross).
My father (Roy A Hales) built a sawmill on the corner of Balsam and 132 Ave around 1947. After the mill burned down, in 1949, he replaced it with a retail lumber yard. Hales Lumber co operated on this location until about 1963, at which point dad moved it to Pitt Meadows. Our family continued to own the parcel until my father and mother divorced, in 1972.
Dad built our home on the lot behind in 1953. Mom lived there until around 1980, after which she rented it out. I purchased the house from her in 1987 and sold it in 1991.
The article below is about the final acre. I believe dad was Yennadon's first scout leader and supplied the land where the scout hall was built. He and Fred Johnson supplied the wood and a group of volunteers built the scout hall. My brother Steven Hales and I (Roy L Hales) were both scouts.
