CHIPPING NORTON
John s/o John & Ann Hawkes was chrs in Chipping Norton on 07 June, 1747.
He would have been about 27 when the following notice appears:
In 1774, John Hawkes, Sweep-Chimney of Chipping Norton, advertises for John Nailer, his apprentice, who has ' eloped.' To any one returning the same John Nailer, Hawkes will give an old soot-bag as reward.
MOVE TO STEEPLE BARTON
John Hawkes probably married Alice shortly after that. They left a string of christening records in the neighbouring town of Steeple Barton between 1779 and 1796. Some of their children were given Biblical names like Shadrach and Abednego, which suggests they were religious.
They were presumably working poor, for there is no record of their surname in the parish's poor rates & other accounts from 1742-85.
Then, in 1790, John Hawkes is suddenly listed as one of the village shopkeepers and taxed a poor rate of 0.6.0

He is listed in the a freeholder (landowner who can vote in Engllish elections) in Middle Barton, June 1826, Aug 1830, Aug 1 &2 1837 , 1846-47 (occ land), 1852-53 on Sanford rd, 1855-56, 1856-57. Richard's family left a string of MIs in the Wescote Barton Graveyard
