John Hawkes was a horse dealer. He appears to have initially lived in Bodicott, Adderbury parish, Oxfordshire.
When the 1841 census was compiled, he appears to have been a 60ish year old widower living in Deddington.
HIS WILL
In the will which he left on Oct 16, 1843, John Hawkes of Clifton in the parish of Deddington left:
- £5 each to his sisters Ann Bayliss & Catherine Hatwell
- his friend James Gardner of Adderbury and his son of the same name are to be executors and given full reign over the estate.
- £20 to be paid to his grandson Joseph Garrett when he reaches the age of 21.
- 1/4 of the remaining estate to go to his son William Hawkes
- 1/4 of the remaining estate to go to his daughter Elizabeth, the wife of William Garrett
- 1/4 of the estate to go to his daughter Mary, w/o Herman Merry
- 1/4 of the remaining estate to go to his daughter Catherine, w/o Joseph Preedy

- Elizabeth d/o John and Mary HAWKES, a horse dealer - chr 14 JAN 1816.
- William s/o John & Mary Hawkes. The 1861 census states he was born in Adderbury 48 years before (about 1814). He was a cattle dealer. The 1881 census states was a farmer of 210 Acres employing 3 Men & 5 Boys. He died in Banbury during the first quarter of 1894.
- Catherine, w/o Joseph Preedy. According to the 1881 census, she was born about 1819 in Clifton, Oxfordshire, England. Joseph was an agricultural labourer. The 1841 census shows this couple living in Boddicott . in 1881 they moved to Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire. Known children Benjamin: (c1838) Mary (c1839) & Albert (1847).
