L'a-scuola come ritorno a tale ozio.

The not-school Per aspera ad astra
Anche uomini completamente estranei
e indifferenti l'uno all'altro,
se vivono qualche tempo insieme,
si svelano reciprocamente l'animo loro,
e nasce, di necessità, una certa confidenza.
Le affinità elettive, J. W. von Goethe
From The Dare project
In the beginning were the Greeks to enhance idleness, peculiar practice of the aristocratic classes. Privilege escaped the practice of the lower classes, devoted to manual labor.
Idleness was pushing to the maximum aesthesia, and took the form of participation in all cultural, theatrical, sporting or political. Idleness in greek was expressed by the term scholè, or "free time." It then evolved into a "place where they were spending free time" or in which philosophical or scientific discussions were held during free time. Then "reading place", and finally "place of education" par excellence.
The school is a term derived from the Latin (schola), derived from the ancient greek σχολή (skholḗ).
Therefore, even etymologically, attributable to laziness, fertile moment of creative thinking, it means to recover the original meaning of the act of learning. The not-school as a return to such idleness.
The parents who fill out comprehensive private school applications think that an academic pedigree is the main pathway to a financially secure future.
Getting the sons into a educative center founded by who devoted himself to make eccellent the minds of selected SNS students and talented musicians would be an absolute coup.
Such not-school exists and it’s called Per aspera ad astra, in Latin “through the difficulties to the stars” and it’s in Tuscuny, close to Lucca.
No known website descriptive or application process for this not-school, that remains a mystery to parents who’d love to enroll their children.
News of that unconventional education set-up began to spread further for a web-page where is described a school without a traditional structure, with the goal to share an education that matches students’ aptitudes and abilities not by arbitrary schedules or institutional programs, and using problem-solving methods to teach critical and divergent thinking.
If you want to teach the children how something works, does not it makes sense first to teach all the tools needed to use it, but let them interact directly with the thing so that the relevance of the tools to become evident in their eyes.
Much secrecy surrounds the project because when you have something so new you need to give it time to expand.
It is a model that overpass the vision of a private educational institution and and it is aimed to gifted, pluripotencial, divergent, talented children or who have never been to school. It is not requested to pupils to pass an IQ test with a score of 138 or above. The teachers have to pass these exams... :)
It is an exceptional place for highly gifted people where and does not have methos and traditional grade levels.
Oreste M. G. decided to start his own school because traditional schools weren’t doing what he thinks should be done to reach his learning goals.
Usually people hate going to school, lack of interest in rote learning led to poor grades in some subjects even if you excell in others. This is not the right environment for who is determined to create his own reality.
Exactly a century ago John Dewey, in 'Democracy and Education' (2016), identified gaps in the education system and noted that children are very curious by nature, while they feel a lack of interest with regard to the subjects studied in class.
After a century, changed the world, changed the media of communication and the social needs, the public school model has remained substantially the same. It 'still a place where students are bored to death, forced to discipline themselves, to practice to obey, led to devote himself to matters perceived as unnecessary or separated from reality, thus annihilating the passion they had before entering, becoming listless, uncertain about own inclinations, uncritical and spirit of initiative.
Per aspera ad astra's ideator, in front of the dramatic failure of traditional education, wishes to revolutionize the classic teaching methods, surpassing the votes, lectures, rigid schedules.
He aims that people love going to his not-school, that think vacations are too long.
He thinks it is important to learn to know the effects of the way we are living on the rest of the world, and understand that other chooses are possibile, if they are improvable.
Among the courses offered appear "responsibility", where boys are encouraged to plan autonomously situations with a budget, and "challenge" in which they find difficulties, since facing a lot of adversity helps to grow up strategies to face adversity.
The not-school intends to transmit the ability to self-motivating, developing self-confidence.
To be self-aware of yourself and confident to try to create a fairer, more just and sustainable world is what the a-school researches.
Teaching children to be kind and respectful to each other is an important opportunity that results challenging, refreshing and rewarding.
Not only what is taught is important, but also how this happens.
Per aspera ad astra's teachers, even them gifted, pluripotencial, divergent, talented (we encourage them to carry out tests whose links are at the bottom before to propose themselves), fuel the learning synergy of students from broadly diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
They are dedicated to excellence not only academic; social, emotional, and physical development of the student; depth, complexity and differentiation tailored to each student’s needs and abilities.
They create an educational haven where nurturing and stimulating the mind, emotionally caring and artistic fostering, caring physical health, developing on social and ethical plans humanistic interests and the personal growth of the students.
They intend to develop creative, productive and ethical world citizens.
Many schools destroy the safety of students while in not-school is given the task of forming strong personality.
The not-school mission is to prepare students to face the change, make them eager to embrace change with a sense of responsibility and desire to meet the challenge independently.
Students are encouraged to develop more flexible intelligence and less factual knowledge, to study not so much for the competition and the reward (no votes advocated by Noam Chomsky) as to get used to the reflection and cooperation.
They are driven to passionately in what they study, to understand the deep meaning and concretely apply the concepts learned (there are similarities with Montessori and Steiner's methods).
Of course, the focus is on the student, considered in his originality and uniqueness in a multicultural context.
Oreste M. G. intends to cultivate the boundless potential of highly gifted children, nurture their passions and talents, and develop a diverse community of creative and constructive lifelong learners.
Although from different cultures, they will feel welcomed and will be taken to develop joyfully sense of social responsibility and a ecologist and cosmopolitan spirit, marked by cooperation and mutual trust.
Stay together according to a cohesive society model.
The goal is also to make the school-to the most exclusive independent 'alternative' school for gifted, able to form in order to pass the exam of access in institutions of excellence such as the Scuola Normale Superiore, or the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna - (higher education - world university rankings 2016).
Like in the experimental school of J. Dewey there will be a ratio of 4 or 5 students per teacher.
There will be a psychological supervisors' team.
Students ages: 5-14
Faculty: 3 stable teachers
Turn of excellent teachers in various disciplines
(all former normaliens or talented musicians, performers)
1 assistant teacher
2 psychological supervisors
1:1 laptop program
