Launch OCHRE from one of the links on the website https://ochre.uchicago.edu. Most users can use the Start OCHRE link, either at the top of the page or midway down the page. This default version requires at least 4GB of RAM and a current version of 64-bit Java 8. (For Java options, see Installing Java.)
There are a few alternative look-and-feel color themes to choose from (Maroon, Crane, Nimbus Gold, Oak, and Winter). For some users, a different color scheme may be easier on the eyes. For users with very high DPI screens, there is a special version that scales appropriately. The default version will be too small to read on these new screens. And finally, for users with older 32-bit computers with less than 4GB of memory, there is a low-memory version. While OCHRE will run on older machines, performance may be an issue. You can find these alternate versions near the bottom of the page.
Your browser may not know how to open the file. The .jnlp (or .jsp) file should be opened with Java Web Start.
You may need to associate JNLP files with OpenWebStart javaws.
Windows:
Right-click on any .jnlp file.
Select "Open with" -> "Choose another app".
If OpenWebStart isn't listed, click "Look for another app on this PC" and navigate to the OpenWebStart installation directory (usually C:\Program Files\OpenWebStart) and select javaws.exe.
Check the box "Always use this app to open .jnlp files".
macOS:
Right-click on a .jnlp file.
Choose Open With
Select OpenWebStart javaws from the list.
CHROME USERS: By default, Chrome will ask you where to save the JNLP file. However, you can tell it to open it by default. Here's how! After downloading the file, click the down arrow next to the download icon in the lower bar of Chrome. Choose "Always open files of this type." Keep in mind, these features are constantly changing in web browsers. If your particular browser refuses to open the JNLP file, it sometimes helps to view the file in your local file system (Windows Explorer or Finder) then right-click to open.
Enter your user name and password in the fields provided. If you forget your password, your Project Administrator is authorized to reset it.
The first time you login to OCHRE, your password will be the same as your user name. OCHRE will prompt you to change it.
As the warning indicates, open a project to which you have edit-access. Navigate to your name under the Users hierarchy.
Click the Change password… button and follow the prompts.
If you plan to use the GEO (Geo-spatially Enabled OCHRE) option, take a moment now to Initialize the GEO environment.
And you’re done! You may logout and login with your new password.
