Searching Using the Linked Items Pane

Use the Linked Items pane to search for items by name.

Open the Linked Items pane by clicking on the paperclip icon in the toolbar.

OCHRE Toolbar

Scope to the Project and database Category in which to search. Use the pick lists to choose your project, then choose Dictionaries.

Use the oak-icon button to search for an exact match on the citation form (lemma) of the dictionary entry. Here we found the place name Abba.

Exact Match

For a more general search with additional options, use the nearest query button to the left. The following search will check not only the lemma form of the entry but also any transcriptions and attested spellings throughout the dictionary. Here it finds an attested form of the word for "father"-- "abum" -- checked in red below.

Wildcards are also permitted. The following finds 2 attested spellings of the same word ("abum"), shown above checked in blue.

It also matches on several attestations of an additional word as shown in the Query Results list below.

Using the sign-by-sign form of the word will look for attested spellings that match the given format. In this example we looked for "ab-ba" and it found the attested form of "Abba" shown below.

Searching in "English"

On the other hand, let's say you were looking for the equivalent of an English word (or French, or German, etc., depending on the native language of your Dictionary). OCHRE will look for matches on the Meaning fields of the dictionary entries, and will return a snippet of the matching meanings to provide some context for the query result items.
