Resumes

This lesson is MANDATORY and is worth a major grade. A resume is an important document to have if you plan on working at least part-time and/or if you want someone to write a letter of recommendation for you. This page contains all of the information you need to create your first resume.

Objectives:

• Create a resume that includes:

  • contact information

  • objective

  • education

  • work experience

  • volunteer experience

  • extracurricular activities

  • achievements

  • skills

• Write a one-sentence objective that conveys a short-term goal for your career and personal growth. 

• Apply appropriate document formatting that conveys consistency, professionalism and clarity.

Instructions:

1. Create a new Google Doc inside your English 4 folder in your Google Drive Writing Portfolio. Title this document resume.

2. Review the "How to Write a Resume" slides.

3. Review the Resume Checklist and example resumes.

4. Watch the tutorial video or follow along with Ms. Ntoso’s demonstration in class to create your resume.

5. Turn in your completed resume on Google Classroom.

Objective: Explore career options and brainstorm next steps as you prepare for life after high school.

Instructions:

1. Complete one (or more) of the self-assessments:

3. Learn more about planning for your career

4. Answer the following questions below:

   • Self-Assessments: What did you learn about yourself from the assessments? What did you find most interesting? Which career(s) sounded most interesting to you?

   • Career Exploration: What careers did you explore? What was the most interesting thing you learned during your exploration? Which career are you most interested in pursuing? (It doesn’t have to be a career that was listed.)

   • Planning & Preparation: What planning tips did you find most helpful? What are your next steps in preparing for life after high school? (What type of training do you need? Will you be attending college? What do you need to do to prepare for senior year? Do you plan to apply for any jobs or internships?)

Professional Communication

Objectives:

• Write a thank you letter, ask a question or share information with a teacher, parent or supervisor.

• Use appropriate diction and tone when writing an email or letter.
