2.4 Poetry Annotation:

• Choose one of the poems from the slides to read and annotate. Make a copy of the Google Doc, and use the commenting tool to add your annotations.

  • Look up the definition of words you don't know and write the definition or synonym in the margin

  • Identify literary techniques - imagery, metaphors, similes, shifts, contrasts and word choice - and explain how each example contributes to meaning in the poem.

  • Add questions that reflect attention to detail, nuance and/or context to gain a deeper understanding of language choices in the poem

  • Paraphrase key lines and summarize each stanza

  • Write a one-sentence statement of the theme of the poem
