Stage 2

Stage 2: Darwin and Kakadu (Northern Territory)

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory - not especially interesting in its own right though known as something of a melting pot of different cultures. We went there as a base to visit Kakadu National Park - famous for its wildlife and ancient aborigine paintings. To reach Kakadu, we rented a campervan - quite expensive but good fun...

We were quite disappointed by Kakadu - the four-hour drive from Darwin to Kakadu was monotonous and much of the park was boring too. The aborigine paintings are quite attractive and interesting but, had we known, we would have preferred to look at them in a book rather than making this detour to see them. Here's a couple of samples, anyway.

The only high point of our stay at Kakadu was a boat trip through the wetlands - dozens of crocodiles and spectacular bird life.

On the way back from Kakadu to Darwin we stopped at a crocodile farm and saw monsters like these being fed...

Even the most monstrous crocodiles start life as cute little babies - I'm sure that tape around his jaws is not really necessary...

Also on the way back to Darwin we stopped at a camel farm. There are a fair number of camels in Australia, some domesticated and some wild.
