COURSE CONTENT INFORMATION

  • Catalog description:

Instruction, reading, and writing practice in the fundamentals of composition, including essay assignments such as expository, argumentative, persuasive, comparison and contrast, analysis, and research papers.

General Education Requirements


Rationale for the course:

  • English 1010 is designed to prepare you for the types of reading and writing students will be expected to do while at EWC. During this course, students are encouraged to expand their definition of “reading” by exploring a range of written, oral, and digital texts.


Course objectives:

  • Develop and communicate ideas in writing using appropriate technologies and formats.

  • Find, evaluate, analyze, synthesize, and appropriately document information from a variety of sources in order to support a persuasive argument.

  • Recognize the importance of purpose, audience, and style as components of effective communication.

  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically about difficult readings which may be outside the students’ fields of interest or expertise.

  • Apply critical evaluation of other writings to students’ own work.

  • Understand and demonstrate writing as a process, including drafting, peer and instructor feedback, and revision.

  • Observe the accepted conventions of spelling, grammar, structure, and punctuation for Standard English.

  • Recognize similarities and differences in purpose and strategies of written, oral, and digital communication.

  • Students will also use the website “Google Classroom” for online discussions and writing assignments equal to those expected in a college level English class. Students will explore advanced points of view and ideas beyond the classroom in this online forum.

  • Turnitin©—is a cloud-based text review service utilized by EWC for originality checking, including improper citations or potential plagiarism. Student work in this course may be submitted to and retained by this service, though the student retains copyright of their written work. Students can view information regarding Turnitin’s privacy and copyright policy at http://www.turnitin.com/en us/privacy-center/overview.

Late Assignments, Projects, and Tests:

  • I expect you to have your homework with you the day it is due. Online assignments will not be accepted late. I will only accept late classwork for regular English if you have an excused absence or we’ve made special arrangements.

Standards for Written Works/Projects:


1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

3. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. Craft and Structure

4. Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.

5. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole. 6. Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

Classroom Expectations:

  • Supplies needed every single day: Current textbook, journal, a notebook, and a writing instrument. Other supplies will be discussed as needed.

  • If you miss my class, it is your responsibility to find out the work you need to make up in class. All assignments are posted on my website through https://sites.google.com/view/ms-harrisons-english-classes/home

  • If your absence is UNEXCUSED you will not be able to make up the work you missed. This includes exams, essays, and projects.

  • Show respect for the teacher as well as the other students at all times.

  • Listen to the instructions and to others.

  • Stay on task

  • Be punctual and prepared.
