A religious cult is a group that demands intense loyalty, typically centered around a single, charismatic leader whose word is unquestionable and whose authority is perceived as absolute, requiring total loyalty. Sometimes, claiming special knowledge or divine insight, their Belief systems are often presented as exclusive or secret, accessible only to members through the leader. With a specific ideology or a person, they frequently discourage critical thinking, showing little tolerance for questioning authority or dissenting opinions. Cults use manipulative techniques and control to maintain power over their members and to isolate them from friends, family, and the outside world, with the Cult often fostering a climate of fear or paranoia regarding anyone or anything outside the group. Members may be punished for behaviors the group disapproves of, and the group can exploit members financially, emotionally, or even sexually, thereby deepening their dependency on the group.
