Agingism is the prejudice or discrimination based on a person's age or the unfair treatment of someone because of their age, and it can look like being ignored in meetings, denied opportunities, or subjected to patronizing behavior and stereotypes in everyday interactions, workplaces, and even in healthcare systems. It manifests as hostile generalizations, stereotypes, and discriminatory actions, such as assuming older adults are technologically incompetent or that younger people aren't capable of profound contributions it can include being Dismissive or Patronizing Behavior like Being talked down to, having things done for you when you're capable of doing them yourself, or having your concerns dismissed as "old" or "imagining things" as well as Stereotyping People or assuming they can't understand or use technology, or that you're retired and don't want to work.
The person might receive Poor Service: receiving lower-quality service in shops or restaurants due to negative attitudes about older people, or Misdiagnosis in Healthcare: Having health symptoms dismissed as "typical for someone your age" rather than being seriously investigated. This might look something like Hiring and promotion discrimination, where you are denied a job or promotion because you're considered too old, or where you see younger employees receiving better opportunities for training and development. Or being forced into Retirement by being pushed out of your job through forced buyouts or other pressure to retire, or by Performance Dismissal: Having your job performance suddenly drop in reviews, or being given less challenging assignments compared to younger colleagues, and being Harassment or Jokes Being the target of age-related jokes or ridicule, even if they are "meant in jest".
