The ________ Tales!
This is a story that was written by a fourth grade student who was currently learning on a third grade level. She is very intelligent, creative, funny, and determined. This student has physical disabilities which limit her to a wheelchair and inhibit her ability to hold a pencil or type. After she expressed interest in writing a story and becoming an author, I planned a week's worth of ELA lessons around her goal of writing a story. She learned about the parts of a story, parts of a story (setting, characters, plot, and theme). After working on graphic organizers to figure out a story, this student dictated the following story for me to type up. The language is limited because speech is difficult for her and she does not use a communication device. However, I wanted her to feel like this was her story, so I kept it as original to her dictation as possible. I helped her choose images off of the internet to put into the story and included some pictures of herself (the main character) of course. This was such a fun project and she was so proud of it. After we finished writing, illustrating, and revising the story, I printed it out, laminated, and added a binding so that she would have it to show her family. Helping her accomplish something like this was a true joy. She learned so much from this project and was so excited to work on it every day. I am so proud of all her hard work and determination!
