Smartboard (Lumio)

What is Lumio?

Lumio is an application that allows teachers to create engaging activities for their Smartboard. The user can create games, presentations, and other interactive activities for their students to utilize during instruction. With a little bit of creativity, Lumio is an excellent way to make adaptive materials for students with special needs.

Where does this fit in the Danielson Framework?

This tech tool fits best under Domain 3 of the Danielson Framework. Using Lumio, teachers can ask questions to their students, which students can then answer on the Smartboard by matching or picking an answer(aspect 3b). Teachers can easily captivate the students through the use of interesting and interactive activities (aspect 3c). As students answer questions and complete activities, the teacher can assess how well the students are learning, which falls right under aspect 3d (using assessment in instruction).

How do I use Lumio in my classroom?

I use Lumio to find and create educational games for my students. I can use these educational games to support a topic that has been learned as well as to assess student learning. Typically, I will use Lumio to support math or ELA lessons by including a matching game (see above). The above game is one that I created to review a section of ELA lessons. I prefer to use a simple theme so that the background of the game is not too distracting to some of my students. It also allows my students with visual impairments to see the pictures or letters/numbers the most easily.
