Life Skills Field Experience

During this field experience I got to work with students of many different abilities.  Many of these students had intellectual disabilities and/or physical disabilities.  Each student was special and unique in his or her own way! I learned so much about how to differentiate for a great amount of needs and different types of needs.  Socioemotional learning was something that I got to see a lot of.  It was fascinating to see how Ms. Vechnak worked so carefully and patiently with all the students.  Even though each of the students' vocabulary was limited, it was clear how much they enjoyed having her as a teacher.

Throughout this field placement I got to see a wide range of services that each student received to help them reach their goals.  These services included, speech and language, physical and occupational therapy, and time with a vision specialist.  Each of the students had very individualized needs so it was very interesting to see a classroom that ran so smoothly and was able to cater to those needs in a meaningful way.

I learned so much about how to relate to these students and communicate efficiently with them.  They are each truly so sweet, unique, and special.  Getting to take the time to get to talk and/or interact with each of them was such a wonderful experience.  Building relationships with these students was easily my favorite part of this field.  I enjoy working with students with a lower functionality so much and I hope that I get the opportunity to do so again soon!
