This plant is a cross produced by Peter D’Amato. He calls it N. x ‘Peter D’amato’, and says it is the cross of ventricosa and lowii. My rude husband says this piece looks like a bidet. Intellectually, this piece is a part of an art conversation I am having with other artists, living and dead. The conversation stems from the question, “When is it copying, and when is it ‘taking inspiration from’?”. My first piece in the conversation was the piece I called, Shoe. Recall that it was inspired in part by a Chinese lion, and an art deco photo of a Chinese lion. The next bit of the conversation was an abstract painting done by my friend, Michael Montfort, in red on black. This pitcher plant is meant to be an answer to Michael. In my vision, the lip is very cat-like, as is the tail. To me, the form suggests the lithe body of a cat. I am hoping that Michael will respond again, either in two or in three dimensions.
