The eel is a long, multi-piece animal that I started by extruding a tube out of the hydraulic Play-doh factory. When one makes multiple piece sculptures, one has to decide whether to hide, or to celebrate the joints. I’m not very good at the precision work hidden joints take, so my pieces are mostly held together with inserted dowels and screws. I don’t think this detracts from what I want to convey. Since I liked the piece, and didn’t want to spoil it by messing up the glaze, I ran a test. The test came out with the nicest black spots on a warm tan background. I was pretty surprised when the eel came out blue gray with blue spots. I still don’t know what happened. So much for trying to act like a scientist/engineer and plan ahead.
