In making this piece, I began the body with the biggest bowl I've ever thrown. I used the Korean method of throwing in which coils are added to the top of the piece, so it can be larger than I can make with one piece of clay. Near the top, the coils needed to be more that six feet long to go around the circumference. My friend Elsa Pering has really good hands, and each of us threw the bowl at the same time on opposite sides. I've never seen anyone else do cooperative throwing before, but it seems like a great idea for large pieces. The Pangolin is made of two pieces connected with a wooden plug because the tail wouldn't fit into the kiln. It also has a marvelous tongue stretching more than three feet that Elsa crocheted for me.
