Coding in Early Learning

Karen Earp of Somerset County Library

The session will start with high-level review of current research on coding, computer science, and computational thinking for early learners. Then Karen will give an overview of the two sample technologies we will be exploring: Indo and KIBO, covering how they work, use cases, and reactions she has received from participants and caregivers. She'll demonstrate how each tool works and break the group into two groups so participants can use the tools themselves. Information sheets and contact information for the vendors as well as sample program plans incorporating the technologies will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to…

●      explain some of the current research about computer science and computational thinking for early learners.

●      use early learning coding tools to complete specific tasks.

●      demonstrate at least two ways that different coding tools can be used in a children's program.
